Lifetime update with purchased maps

So..because I'm getting little confused..

I have western europe maps with garmin lifeupdate (which was already on my device when I bought it in shop).

If I buy DVD with Europe maps (they are no offers like eastern europe, western europe on DVD, there is only a whole Europe offer) will I be able to use my garmin lifeupdate for, for example eastern europe maps, or do I need to buy garmin lifeupdate again?

Please, confirm this information, I do not want to buy something without knowing how it works.

I am happy to answer your questions. The only way to get a new region with Lifetime Map Updates is to have that region pre-loaded onto the GPS device. If the device comes with Lifetime Maps ("LM" in its suffix) then there is nothing additional to buy. If the device does not have "LM" in its suffix, then you can add it to that region buy purchasing the updates separately. You cannot add Lifetime Map Updates to a region that is not pre-loade on a GPS device. So unfortunately, if you want to buy Lifetime Map Updates for a region such as North America, you will need to have a device that comes pre-loaded with North America maps.

(The exception is if you happen to still find City Navigator NT maps on a DVD that has an unused Product Key. We no longer sell these but there may be some still around. We can add Lifetime Map Updates to maps that were purchased on DVD.)

These processes could change, but this is how they are established right now. If you think this should be different, I recommend submitting the suggestion to our ">Garmin Ideas">Garmin Ideas site. Every suggestion here gets viewed but not all get used.

Only one Lifetime Map Update can be assigned to a device per region. The regions are Europe, North America, South America, etc. Since this device has Lifetime Map Updates for the Western portion of Europe, it cannot get another Lifetime Map Update subscription for the rest of Europe. So even if you buy a DVD map that includes all of Europe, you will not be able to get updates for the Eastern portion on this device. Unfortunately, to get Lifetime Map Updates to include Eastern Europe, you will need a new European GPS device that includes all of Europe.

I realize you are in the development group at Garmin and not the marketing group, but Garmin really needs to provide a lifetime update option for added map products, especially for devices like the Montana that do not come with a preinstalled map. Either that, or Garmin needs to bundle a lifetime map with products like the Montana. Without that option, it significantly reduces the appeal of that device ... and we wonder why folks are dumping dedicated GPS devices for smart phones ... just sayin' :)

I appreciate the explanations. However in this case I'm not sure the Garmin Ideas site will be of any value. In this case we are not asking for the development or release of anything new. All we want is continuation of an existing product.

The existing DVD product perfectly addresses *all* of the situations described in this discussion and always has. So i don't know what we would request on the Garmin Ideas site. ??

I think you should contact Garmin in the UK as there are subtle differences in the way lifetime maps work in Europe. As an example if you have a device without lifetime updates preloaded with only a portion of the EU map and you buy the 'lifetime update' then you get the whole of Europe. This isn't the case I the US, where a lifetime update simply allows you to update the already pre-loaded map. See here:

Even if your original maps just covered a single region, nüMaps upgrades 1 device for the whole of Europe so you enjoy a Lifetime of confident navigation.

It may therefore be that you can buy the lifetime update for the EU, understanding that you already have a lifetime update for Western Europe, and then get the full map, but Garmin UK should be able to confirm this one way or the other.

Another way Garmin could address this is to offer a downloadable map product bundled with a lifetime update subscription. That probably would require some development effort, but to me it makes more sense than requiring 2 purchases (DVD plus subscription).

Hi again!

I called to Europe customer service yesterday and explained my problem. I was really surprised when they told me..I'm supposed to have whole Europe maps in my device! No idea why I did not have them, but after telling my serial number, nice lady did something in the system I was able to download maps of the whole Europe with lifetime update!
