Google Earth not found by BaseCamp

I have Google Earth Pro installed on my Win7 computer, but Basecamp thinks it's NOT installed. How can I fix? thanks
  • I have reverted both machines to GE version 7.1.2.2041, and all is now harmonious. So yes, it does appear to be an issue with recent versions of GE. The question is, who has to fix their software to make things work with the current versions, Google or Garmin? I'm afraid the answer to that lies above my pay grade. The short answer is to not allow GE to self-update. I couldn't find a way to do that.

When you download GE you can select the advanced setup; one of the options is to install it without automatic updates.

Post #8 doesn't answer the question. It merely suggests that a ticket would be opened to investigate the issue. As of yet, no responsibilities or solutions have been posted.

Since I've already installed the retro version of GE, it appears I must have missed the advanced setup option (don't recall seeing such a thing, but I'll take your word for it). Do you know of any way to disable auto updates on an existing instillation?

You can disable the Google update service in Windows, I suppose, I don't really know, but it would probably be easier/safer to just download GE again. The advanced options are at the bottom of the download page. Click on the link before accepting the terms and downloading.

The download page to which you are referring serves up the current version only, which as we know, is problematic with BaseCamp and MapSource. Google recently changed their downloader/installer to offer the advanced option to which you refer. To download earlier versions, as in ones that are compatible with BC and MS, you have to go to a different page, which simply allows you to download the install executable and does not offer any option to say no thanks to auto updates. My research shows that trying to disable the auto update feature on installed older versions is complex, messy and controversial.

The BC developer opened a case for this issue a month ago. It would be nice if he responded with an update to the issue.

Not so. It also offers the option to install 7.0

You are correct. And when selecting 7.0, the option for selecting automatic updates is greyed out. I hope that means that auto updates have been rendered non-functional. Ultimately, Garmin (presumably them and not Google) needs to fix their software so that it will be compatible with newer version of GE. Unfortunately for me, I still use MapSource quite frequently, and MapSource is not compatible with newer versions of GE either. There is zero chance that Garmin will offer an update to MapSource. My only hope is that by fixing the link that is broken between BC and GE, the link between MS and GE is also fixed. Perhaps BC and MS share some external piece of code somewhere that links them to GE. In many ways, I still prefer MS to BC. Thanks for the assistance.

  • Basecamp has no trouble finding a running instance of Google Earth.

The automatic updates shouldn't have anything to do with it.

Basecamp appears to look for a running copy and, if there isn't one, it tries to run the file.

If things are not installed in the right order or something, Basecamp thinks there is no file (it considers Earth not to be installed).

As far as I understand, all versions of Earth is installed in the same place.
  • I have had GE for a long time and upgraded to GE Pro many months ago. I have never had any issues with BaseCamp detecting and launching GE Pro automatically. But it suddenly stopped working yesterday. "Google Earth not found". I discovered that if I start GE or GE Pro (they are both installed) manually, and THEN select View/Google Earth/Selected Items, it works as before. But if GE or GE Pro are not already running when I do that, BaseCamp says it cannot find GE. I'm running BaseCamp 4.4.7, but that upgrade was quite a while ago and this behavior/problem did not start until just yesterday.

What might have changed? I haven't upgraded anything recently.
  • Perhaps a Windows update has broken something?
