INSERT Tool not working anymore

When i have finished drawing a track and right clicked to do this, i used to be able to click the insert tool and carry on drawing the track, if i hovered over the end a bigger black circle appeared and then you could left click and carry on but now all it wants to do is split the last 2 waypoints with no bigger black circle when you hover over the end.

I have spoke to Garmin about this and they cant help me???

Can anyone help

Cheers
  • This is working for me with routes in 4.4.6 using the Direct activity profile. It's not working with any other activity profile selected, but then I've never used it in anything other than direct so have no idea if that is normal or not?
  • Insert Tool to Extend Route Funky

BC 4.4.6, Windows 8.1 I have seen posts about funky behavior of the insert tool when using to extend a route, but nothing specific (maybe I missed such a post?). What I am seeing is: when using the Direct profile, it behaves as it used to and as expected, i.e., when you hover directly over the end point of a route, the point shows a larger dark gray circle around it and if you then click, you can extend the route to a new point(s). However, now, if you are using Driving profile and do the same thing, when hovering directly over the end point, you instead get a highlight of the last segment, and if you click, are in shaping point insertion mode. 'What I have found, though, is if you hover over an area about 1/8 - 1/4" away from the end point in a direction other than where the last route segment came from, the gray circle does appear and you can click and do the extension. But the point where the circle is triggered is very small, and it's very fussy to get it. The point of the insert "pencil" seems to need to point to a location directly on the diameter of the circle, though when you are trying to get it, the circle is not there to guide you where to point.

I have been able to trigger the gray "extend" circle on all routes I've tried, but it takes some hover-searching to find the magic point. I haven't tried all profiles, but suspect that all except Direct now have this bug.

    JM, can you reproduce?
  • I believe this has been raised before, what I can't recall is where and what the response was.

Ok thanks i will give it a try and report back!
  • Switch to the Direct activity profile, extend the route, then switch back. Or use the tip in C14_Rider's post above.

Edit: Just had a play, the easiest way is to hover until you get the black line then move the insert tool along the black line to the end point, that brings up the black circle without fail.
  • Well, there must be some variable we don't have quite identified, maybe behavior with Windows 8.1 is different, your "without fail" method doesn't always work for me with routes using Driving profile. For example, if I have a route whose last segment is directly either northbound or southbound, moving the cursor north or south along the line either to or beyond the point doesn't work, I can only get the circle to appear by moving the cursor directly either west or east of the endpoint, perpendicular to the line of the last segment, out to a point that equals the diameter of the circle. So there is some variation, but I think it's true that if you search for it, you will always find it somewhere.

edit -- The behavior also seems to be affected by what type of point is at the end of the route, if it's a saved waypoint, it seems more generous in allowing selection of the circle, but if it's just a point created by the routing tool, it's much fussier.
  • Ah OK, clearly it doesn't work for all. Either way it's not working as it should!

Well i have tried everything and still no luck, the only thing i can do is draw another track then join the 2, you all mention changing the activity profile? this only applies to routes though and not tracks yes??
  • Oh, yes, sorry, my post was related to routes only. I do see that your original post specified tracks, sorry. I can't get a created track to use the insert tool to extend it either. I don't use tracks, so I'm not clear in what previous version that worked. In general, routes are where you plan to go, and tracks are records of where you've been. Would using a route with a Direct profile do what you want better anyway? I admit I'm not familiar with all the uses for tracks since I don't use them.

.......I'm not clear in what previous version that worked. .....

Extending a track works same as it ever did in 4.4.4, at least on my win7 machine. It would be real nice if Garmin made it real easy to regress to a previous version. Don't hold your breath. Sometimes you can find an earlier version on the internet.
