Maps Show on Device

I have 1-24 topo from Garmins N/E 1-24 CD and Maine Topo from GPS File Depo on a micro sd card which I had in a Map 78s. I installed the card in my new Oregon 600 and these maps are all in one folder or at least that's what it looks like. Only two maps show on the device, WW Base map and in the other slot or folder these topo's. I swear when this card was in the 78s these topo's were all separate and could be turned on or off. Do I need to format and resend with different names or something? The folder in the device show's New England Topo-NY Topo 24k on one line and in much letters on the second line Topo US 24k Northeast but its all in one "folder".
  • You should be able to go into "Setup", "'Maps", "Configure Maps" and enable the one you would like to use. They should be in the Garmin directory on your sd card and will be .img files.

When I open the configure maps what I see is as in the last sentence of my orig. post. "The folder in the device show's New England Topo-NY Topo 24k on one line and in much letters on the second line Topo US 24k Northeast but its all in one box or folder."
  • Hook your GPS to your computer with an USB cable or if your computer has a sd card slot you can put the card in it. Use File Explorer to look in the Garmin directory of the sd card. How many .img files are in it? What are their names? If more then one has the same name try renaming one of them.
  • If more then one has the same name

That's simply impossible; you can't have two (or more) files with exactly the same name in a folder/directory...

Just loaded the sd card into windows opened Garmin folder and the maps are listed as New England Topo- NY Topo 24k. The maps are actually Maine Topo(from gps file depo ) and a portion of Garmin's 24k N/E CD. The sd card is 8GB, would it be simpler to just load the whole N/E 24k cd and the Maine Topo if there is room?
  • Do you mean that both maps are in a single .img file? Switching maps on or off is done per file on the Oregon 600; on the GPSMAP78 it works exactly the same...
  • That's simply impossible; you can't have two (or more) files with exactly the same name in a folder/directory...

Yes you are correct. it was late and I wasn't thinking clear. It sounds like they are listed as one on the GPS and I was trying to think of a reason. I wish the OP would give us the number of .img files and the file names. I have asked for them here and on another forum. I left out the same name part on the other post.

How did you load the maps in the first place? Did you use Map Install (from Basecamp) or Mapsource? Did you select tiles from both maps before you told the map installer to put them on the device?

It sounds like that is what you did; selected tiles from two different mapsets and installed them to the device in a single operation, which results in a single map file on the device containing all the selected tiles.

That's okay because the map installers are capable of doing that and many of the devices are capable of distinguishing which mapset the tiles came from and will allow you to enable/disable according to the original mapset. All of my devices are like that. I have map files that contain tiles from as many as 5 different mapsets (CNNA 2015.1, Metroguide Canada v5, Topo Canada v4, Backroad Mapbooks, Northwest Trails) in a single map file (gmapsupp.img) and all of my devices recognize the original mapsets and allow me to toggle on that basis.

From what JaVaWa said, it sounds like your device is not capable of allowing you to toggle the map tiles by the original mapset names they came from but only by the .img map file that is loaded. That's probably why you see the combined name displayed when you try to manage the maps.

Oops, I should have mentioned the solution if what I suggested above is the problem. You'll have to create two map files for the device; each map file containing only tiles from a single mapset. You'll have to make sure each has a unique name, of course.

When I open the Garmen folder there is one .img file called New England-NY topo 24K.img. These maps were loaded from Basecamp. Is there a way to separate these into individual .img files with different names? Maybe I should format the card and start over? The card is a 8GB. Is there room to load the entire N/E 24K Garmen CD. I din't it all but maybe its simpler that way?
