Route question

After installing 4.2.5 and updating an existing driving route, then recalculating, the route does not show the route over roads, but shows straight lines from waypoint to waypoint. Would anyone have any ideas what the problem is? Thanks.

  • I suspect you have the Direct activity selected. Double click the route and look at the top right in the properties tab. In the drop down box does it say Direct? If so choose another activity then recalculate.
  • Just had a good look at your screenshot, is the map you have selected routeable, I didn't think that one was? If not that's another reason why you would have straight lines.

I am having a similar problem and suspect that there is a bug. I have my database held in Dropbox and up until now I have had no problems accessing it with different computers (only ever one at a time). I have a custom profile called Motorcycle tramp on, which is essentially the same as the car fastest time. I set up a number of routes on my desktop, then shut it down and went onto my laptop. I selected a route, set the routing to my custom one and it calculated a completely different route, which was almost like a shortest distance. I deleted the custom profile and set it up again from the standard motorcycle profile, but set the route options exactly the same as the car profile. I got another completely different route from the first. I then set up the custom profile from the car profile and the route is again different but now the same as the car. I went into options and changed the routing from fastest time to shortest route, and there was no difference in the calculated route. I don't know what is going on but that is a definite bug, it seems to just pick up the profile and ignore any changes that are madeto it.
  • I've just played with a few of the routes I have in Basecamp, and I can change profiles, recalculate etc without any issue. That's using Basecamp 4.3.1, Win7 and CN EU 2014.40

Difficult to know what's happening. @B1GROG The OP was using US Topo 2008, what mapset are you using?

Sorry, I was using 4.2.5, because updating from Basecamp said that I had the latest version??
I have just updated to 4.3.1 from here and it all seems to be working OK again. FYI I am using Basecamp on XP (desktop) and win7 64bit (HP netbook) with Europe NT 2014.3.1.
Are the profiles held in the database, or are they local to the machine? I suspect that they are local to the machine which is not good when using cloud data bases? If held locally is there any way that I can copy profiles from one machine to the other so that they are in sync?
  • I'm pretty sure they're in the database. The reason I say that is that I run Basecamp on both my desktop and laptop, I keep them in sync by copying the database from my desktop (where I do most of my work) to my laptop over my wifi network. Profiles are the same on both including my custom profiles, and I've never taken steps to update those on my laptop so they must be there from reading the database.
  • Routes are definitely in the database, that's how I move my work between PCs, I copy the relevant db across ... now it's 4.3 and you'll find it (unless you've changed it from the default) at c:\users\xxx\app data\roaming\garmin\basecamp\database
  • That will work if it's the same BC version, I'm not clear if it will work if the BC versions are different. Won't hurt to try though.

Remember that 4.3.1 is the first version that does not support XP. 4.2.5 may have future releases if major issues are discovered for legacy users but currently these are not planned. In any rate, is it possible for me to get ahold of the route that is causing problems? Can be posted here or e-mailed to the support e-mail if privacy is a concern.

...Double checked that topo 2008 is routable...

No, Topo 2008 is NOT routable.

If you are seeing a route which appears to follow roads on Topo 2008 you have first calculated it on another map product which is routable and then selected Topo 2008. <==Used to do this all the time on my 276C
