Make a simple 4 point Route i this order:
1. Grand Junction, CO
2. NPS Headquarters at South Rim of Grand Canyon NP
3. Lodge at North Rim of Grand Canyon , NP
4 Different location in Grand Junction, CO for End of route.

Now,import that gpx file into Basecamp and see how Basecamp calculates that route using different maps.
Using Basecamp, (both the latest production ver and the latest Beta) with OSM maps I get routed East on I-70 from GJ all the way to, and into, then out of, and all the way around Denver, then South on I-25 thru Albuq. NM, then continuing South all the way down to I-10, West across Ariz on I-10 and then North up thru Phoenix to the South Rim of the NP , then correctly around to the North Rim, then correctly back to GJ on a logical route. Totally "out in left field" routing logic.

Here's what's weird. Both City Navigator 2008, and even old Mapsource routes correctly. (West first, then S to S Rim, around to N Rim, then back on diff hwy).
This is using exactly the same simple 4 pt route and exactly the same maps, and routing instruction choices, and no change in profiles.

Got any ideas? I posted this same topic in the Basecamp Wiki but got no replies at all.

Using exactly the same GPX file and exactly the same maps and same routing instructions and avoidances in each of the following cases, I have concluded that this is absolutely a Basecamp problem, NOT a map problem.

    Montana 650 routes correctly.
    Oregon 550 routes correctly
    Map 78S routes correctly
    Map 76CSx haven't tried yet
    Mapsource v 6.16.3 routes correctly

Basecamp v 4.2.5 Both v of Basecamp route absolutely and totally incorrectly
Basecamp v 4.3.0.3 Beta v when compared to anything else

Easy solution to the problem.......Quit using Basecamp.
  • What you observe is that outdoor devices are more or less compatible with Mapsource. What you failed to notice is that automotive devices have routing similar to BaseCamp. Since you are testing car routing, you should verify it at appropriate devices. Then you would probably notice, that it is OSM map which stands out.

IMO one can create OSM map which has decent routing in BaseCamp. You simply should find a better map.

Could this be a case of you get what you pay for?
My experience with Mexico maps ( a few years back, situation will have changed, Garmin has newer)
OSM - free - not useful for much
Garmin Mexico -$ - useful, but off the major roads , not much help
BiciMapas -$$$ - awesome . fantastic detail, including topo info, every thing above a goat trail indicated and routable

    YMMV

My thoughts are that Garmin has a problem when one (or some) of their products send the user one direction and others send you on a different and bogus route when presented with exactly the same starting data.

    Just saying......
  • From the description of the OSM route, I would guess that the problem is that BaseCamp isn't seeing routable roads in Utah. Try creating a simple route within Utah or Grand Junction to Salt Lake City and see if that works. If it doesn't, then I would uninstall all the OSM maps and then download and reinstall them - I would probably try it anyway. And yes, I understand that things are working in MapSource and on different devices and no, I don't know why BaseCamp would have issues when the others don't. Just trying to help.

@BTLAKE,Thanks for the suggestions. However, "not seeing routable roads in Utah" can't be the problem because after routing all the way across Colorado in the absolutely opposite direction (from what it should), then goofy routing in the Denver area, it routed completely down into NM, over into AZ to pt 2.
From pt 2 to 3and 4 it routed correctly back thru Utah along part of the exact same road that it "should" have started out on.

    Thanks for the attempt though.
  • In that case your routing indicates an overly strong preference for interstates vs. highways.

Ignore the results in MapSource and your devices. As I understand it, in BaseCamp you got a reasonable route with a City Navigator map and this absurd route with the OSM map. It I get two absurd routes with one routing routine I'll blame the routing routine. If I get a reasonable route and an absurd route with the same routing routine it is likely a map issue.

This could be a problem with what was installed. Ways to that might reveal this are trying using shorter distance instead of faster speed to see if it starts using non-interstates. You could also investigate Albuquerque to Flagstaff or Phoenix on I-40 work (seems odd that it avoided this).

It could also be an issue with the way OSM has classified roads. Make a new activity profile base on your current set-up. Try unchecking everything. Then try setting all speeds the same. The idea is that US highways or undivided roads are being classified as a lesser road.
