How to use BaseCamp without having to plug in your GPS

If you want to use BaseCamp with all your maps but without having to plug in your GPS (or USB flash drive) every time, follow these steps:

1. Download and install LTR Data’s ImDisk Virtual Disk Driver from here: http://reboot.pro/files/file/284-imdisk-toolkit/
2. Create and format a new virtual disk
3. Copy your maps onto it
4. Save it to your hard drive as a disk image
5. Mount the disk image prior to launching BaseCamp

Now when BaseCamp loads it will access the maps from the disk image without requiring you to plug in your GPS.

Detailed step-by-step instructions are attached to this post.

Hope this helps :D

Yes I know, it is a basic process but somehow it doesn't work with my laptop.
When I try to use the map Basecamp says ''an error happened while trying to use the product''

    Found a slick solution

Yes I know, it is a basic process but somehow it doesn't work with my laptop.
When I try to use the map Basecamp says ''an error happened while trying to use the product''

I finally found a very simple and effective solution.

Using Garmin express software you go to ''device'' then ''advance'' at the bottom of that screen you can see '' would you like to install map file on your computer for use with other Garmin software'', you select '' install'' and you go back to the update screen to start the ''install now''
For sure you need to be registered with Garmin.

So I can use the latest map with Basecamp and don't need a usb stick or don't need a virtual disk.
This is working great, I am now an happy camper:D.
  • You didn't 'find a very simple and effective solution', that 'simple and effective' solution was covered right at the start of this thread, is covered in numerous other threads in these forums, and only a few posts above where you stated:

    Hello,
I own a Nuvi3597 and the maps are in the unit, is there a way to copy them on my hard drive so I can use them with Basecamp?

The rest was a discussion of what to do if you couldn't download the map files to your PC using Express or MapUpdater so the asumption was that applied to you!

Yes, I read it but didn't catch on, there was no example on how to do it so I didn't dig deeper and completely forgot about it.
What can I say.....I am human.

Thanks everyone for your help, this is a great forum.

You are welcome and if I sounded a bit short it was due to finding out this morning that some brainless idiot had put a brick through my car window.
  • Sorry to hear that. Makes me mad too, senseless vandalism
  • There is a few people that are not even seeing the maps in BaseCamp.
This was the case for me as well - what I did was copied the map files to the root of the new Virtual Disk - and BC could not find them.
The solution was to create a new directory called GARMIN on the VD and then put the maps there - this worked awesome!
