Trip Planner Feature is here! (BETA)

Hello! My name is Jason. I am a fairly new desktop apps developer here at Garmin, and I would like to introduce everyone to our new Trip Planner feature! Trip Planner is still in Beta, but we were hoping here on our team that we could get some feedback in the hopes of improving what we have created. Please take a moment, download the build, play with the new feature, and give us some feedback right here in this thread. We would look forward to hearing from you!

“Trip Planner” is a new feature that allows you to easily create trip schedules for vacations or business and lets you add points of interest such as hotels, theme parks, places to eat, camp grounds, and anything else that comes with your map.

The BaseCamp 4.2.0.4 build gives you an early preview into Trip Planner. Please let us know how you like it and what you think we can improve.

The build can be found in this thread: https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?37158-BaseCamp-4-2-0-4-Beta-is-available

Creating a Trip

You can set fields such as how long your trip is in days or if you know the dates you can enter them. You can also specify how long you wish to travel in a given day, and whether or not this trip will have return legs.

Starting point and Ending point

You can search for just about anything you would like to travel to and from. In the example posted below, we go from one city to another and once trip planner has created your routes, you can enter in the specific locations where you will be traveling from and to.

Viewing your Trip

Once your trip is created you can view your routes!

Editing your Trip

You can move points of interest up and down, you can create new hubs, and you can drag and drop find results into your trip. You can search along the route for points of interest in a given day, and you can also create days and new destinations. Trip planner takes care of the rest! You can even print your trip!

  • Hi Robert,

Is it possible that the Trip Planner has a bit of "slack" built in regarding the drive time per day? The trip you show is less than 19 hours and you said you have the drive time set to 18 hours. If I was manually planning a trip, I would not allow, nor want a planner to allow, an extra 51 minutes to force the trip to be broken into two days instead of one. Have you tried adding enough to the trip to force it to at least 2 fairly full days (eg. minimum of, say, 24-ish driving hours) and see what happens?

I agree that not being able to insert via points from the map would be a showstopper for me. But Basecamp's general routing approach is already a showstopper for me (still using Mapsource) so I haven't even bothered with the Trip Planner yet!! :)

    ...ken...
  • Ken,
You and I are the same regarding using MapSource and struggling to use this worthless program called BaseCamp!
Think about this. Regardless of my driving time duration, 0500 stop time in Torrey is the next day! not the first day! And if you look at day 2 the trip does NOT continue/start day 2 at midnight (1200am) as if you had traveled through the night. I believe the Garmin software experts have 'fixed' the day(s) end location when the route is initially calculated, and it stays fixed, instead of allowing it to be recalculated based on added via's, changing routes, etc. The software people should look and see how it is done in S&T, so easy!

IF ANY GARMIN SOFTWARE EXPERTS ARE READING THIS LET ME EXPLAIN ROUTING MENTALITY OF USERS!!!

    Ride Safe,
    Robert

ps: Here is the known route description, Garmin software experts please plan using Trip Planner and send the completed route to me. I would normally put the beginning and ending points, and then modify the route to the specified generalized waypoints and highways.
    route.

The 2014 Three Flags Classic will begin in Tucson Arizona, head north to Flagstaff, round the Grand Canyon on US 89 and US 89a through Kanab, turn east and north on Utah 12 to Torrey, continue north through the mountain highways of central Utah, drop out of the mountains at Ogden and head northwest to Boise, continue north and west through great mountain roads to Walla Walla, head northerly to Washington 20, travel west through the Cascades, turn north on Washington 9, cross the border and head east on BC Highway 7 to Harrison Hot Springs.
    Ride: August 29 – September 1, 2014
    Ending Banquet: September 2, 2014
  • Hi Robert,

A friend of mine has done the 3 Flags a couple of times. But that was back when it was truly 3 flags, eg. Mexico-USA-Canada or the reverse. I see it's now only 2 flags. Or 2 flags and a wave at the 3rd. :)

    ...ken... <2011 BMW F650GS>
  • Ken, Still 3 Flags, you leave Tucson and head to Mexico. Just finished the Border to Border, basically Laredo, TX to Winnipeg, Canada, ie going to Mexico after starting in Laredo.
    Ride Safe,
    Robert

I cannot seem to get the planner to go to the next day after stopping for the night. If I set a departure time for the next morning the planer doesn't automatically go to the next day in a mufti-day trip? For example if I arrive at a 'teaverl time' created time, and then want to stay the night and 'depart' at 0600 the next morning, the 0600 is in red but the 'day' stays the same. I set my numbers of hours high, so I can see where I am at a given time and then adjust my stops accordingly. But I cannot get planner to go to the next day automatically.
    Help or advice needed?
    Robert

At the top of your "hub" you might find the "+" button. That will add a day. Copy the last waypoint of the previous day into the new day and it will be the first item in your new day. Does that help you at all? We have cases for continual improvements to trip planner, but trip planner, while somewhat manual, is rather free-form.
  • I don't need another day, I already have 4 in the 'program'. I need the timeline to automatically move to another day. I think copying and pasting will interrupt the timeline, don't you think?
Please just construct the trip I outlined and see what you come up with.

I sent you my phone number and I'll be more than happy to walk you through the process using BC and you can judge for yourself the 'things' that can be fixed and more importantly you'll know the how.

Is there any way to specify mileage per day rather than driving time? I tend to plan all my trips based on mileage.

Not currently, but we are planning feature enhancements to Trip Planner for 4.4 (we are working on 4.3 at the moment). I am not sure if this is on the list but I can found out.
