Trip Planner Feature is here! (BETA)

Hello! My name is Jason. I am a fairly new desktop apps developer here at Garmin, and I would like to introduce everyone to our new Trip Planner feature! Trip Planner is still in Beta, but we were hoping here on our team that we could get some feedback in the hopes of improving what we have created. Please take a moment, download the build, play with the new feature, and give us some feedback right here in this thread. We would look forward to hearing from you!

“Trip Planner” is a new feature that allows you to easily create trip schedules for vacations or business and lets you add points of interest such as hotels, theme parks, places to eat, camp grounds, and anything else that comes with your map.

The BaseCamp 4.2.0.4 build gives you an early preview into Trip Planner. Please let us know how you like it and what you think we can improve.

The build can be found in this thread: https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?37158-BaseCamp-4-2-0-4-Beta-is-available

Creating a Trip

You can set fields such as how long your trip is in days or if you know the dates you can enter them. You can also specify how long you wish to travel in a given day, and whether or not this trip will have return legs.

Starting point and Ending point

You can search for just about anything you would like to travel to and from. In the example posted below, we go from one city to another and once trip planner has created your routes, you can enter in the specific locations where you will be traveling from and to.

Viewing your Trip

Once your trip is created you can view your routes!

Editing your Trip

You can move points of interest up and down, you can create new hubs, and you can drag and drop find results into your trip. You can search along the route for points of interest in a given day, and you can also create days and new destinations. Trip planner takes care of the rest! You can even print your trip!

  • You are not alone, and most of us who are used to the older style 'route planner' are hanging on to our older devices for the very reason you state. Trip planner has many limitations, not least the ones you point out. If you use traffic for example you don't know what the traffic is like on the whole trip, just the next leg.

But this really isn't the forum to raise this. Good to know that you've raised it with garmin UK, you might also wish to raise it here http://www8.garmin.com/contactUs/ideas/

Whether Garmin will ever revert back to the older 'route planner' and abandon the current 'trip planner' on the nuvi, dezl and zumo range I don't know ... if they ever do I might at last upgrade from my 1490

Incidentally while it's true you can only have 10 routes displayed on the older models that have route planner, you can have hundreds stored on the GPS and simply import them when you need to use them, so there are easy ways to get around the 10 route limit should you wish to bring your 760 out of retirement :)
  • Thread about trips is a good place to give a warning, that Garmin system is not coherent, trips in BaseCamp are different than in nuvi, trips in nuvi don't work like routes and the concept of planning multiple point route on PC and navigate it with nuvi was lost some 3 years ago.
  • Interestingly it seems Garmin had many complaints about the recalculating announcement being annoying so they removed it, then got even more complaints. AFAIK it's been reintroduced on later models.
  • This thread is more about the trip planner feature in Basecamp, and not how trip planner works on devices. What these forums are missing is one devoted to the nuvi, dezl and zumo ranges ... many of us have asked for them but so far to no avail. There are some other forums around though that also provide help:

Can anyone please point me in the right direction for any good Trip Planner tutorials?
  • Automatically go to next day question

Yes. You can choose one day when you start a trip and BaseCamp will expand the trip to cover the drive time. If you want to expand the number of days at your destination, you can click the + button on the top of the hub to add days. It won't pick places for you to stop, but it will tell you approximately where you will be at certain times, so you can use the slider to pick where/when you want to stop and search for things around that.

I cannot seem to get the planner to go to the next day after stopping for the night. If I set a departure time for the next morning the planer doesn't automatically go to the next day in a mufti-day trip? For example if I arrive at a 'teaverl time' created time, and then want to stay the night and 'depart' at 0600 the next morning, the 0600 is in red but the 'day' stays the same. I set my numbers of hours high, so I can see where I am at a given time and then adjust my stops accordingly. But I cannot get planner to go to the next day automatically.
    Help or advice needed?

Garmin appears to be really good explaining how to do something exactly how they would do it, and by extension program. Garmin sucks at tell you how to change the variables once you have it planned out.

Why a person has to read pages and pages of threads to learn something that could be explained in a well crafted paragraph, I dont know. I suppose its an extension of forums culture, where they force you to suffer all the pain that developers had to experience before they pay any head to your comments ("you n00b!")

Dates in trip out of order

I am on 4.2.4 and just starting to play with Trip Planner. I have a trip with 4 days, but the days are not in order. For example, I have day 1 set to March 1, 2014. Day 2 is 2/26, Day 3 is 2/28 and Day 4 is 2/27. How can I fix that?

Here is an example. I used the right-click feature to "add day before" a couple of times in creating this plan. Wonder if there is a bit of a bug - that the days are linked by order of creation, not order they appear in the list...

And now I notice that the "add day before/after" feature seems to no longer work, now that I have selected a calendar date.
