Trip Planner Feature is here! (BETA)

Hello! My name is Jason. I am a fairly new desktop apps developer here at Garmin, and I would like to introduce everyone to our new Trip Planner feature! Trip Planner is still in Beta, but we were hoping here on our team that we could get some feedback in the hopes of improving what we have created. Please take a moment, download the build, play with the new feature, and give us some feedback right here in this thread. We would look forward to hearing from you!

“Trip Planner” is a new feature that allows you to easily create trip schedules for vacations or business and lets you add points of interest such as hotels, theme parks, places to eat, camp grounds, and anything else that comes with your map.

The BaseCamp 4.2.0.4 build gives you an early preview into Trip Planner. Please let us know how you like it and what you think we can improve.

The build can be found in this thread: https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?37158-BaseCamp-4-2-0-4-Beta-is-available

Creating a Trip

You can set fields such as how long your trip is in days or if you know the dates you can enter them. You can also specify how long you wish to travel in a given day, and whether or not this trip will have return legs.

Starting point and Ending point

You can search for just about anything you would like to travel to and from. In the example posted below, we go from one city to another and once trip planner has created your routes, you can enter in the specific locations where you will be traveling from and to.

Viewing your Trip

Once your trip is created you can view your routes!

Editing your Trip

You can move points of interest up and down, you can create new hubs, and you can drag and drop find results into your trip. You can search along the route for points of interest in a given day, and you can also create days and new destinations. Trip planner takes care of the rest! You can even print your trip!

I finally got it working as advertised. Still needs a lot of improvement finding addresses when starting a trip. It would help alot if I could move, copy & past or drag existing waypoints into the trip maker. that would make it a lot easier. Is it possible?
  • It seemed like a good idea to try Trip Planner for a 7,000km trip to remote desert areas. Unfortunately after 45 minutes I can't get past first base (i.e. home in Sydney).

I enter a starting destination and the next destination then hit 'Start Trip' to see what happens and every time I get "Error please enter strating location".

Once it crashed BaseCamp as well after I tried to change the first destination.

So I really can't contribute any intelligent comments on the tool and will revert to saving a series of routes for my trip. At least I know I can get that to work OK.

    Trip Planner Direct Routing

    Hi,

I am planning a trip where the first leg is flight, i.e. direct, without route planning. I can do it, but when ever I change something in that leg, the tool falls back to "car" mode. It is annoying since routing all the way across Europe takes time.

Please instruct me if there are settings I could do to avoid this. Thanks!

So far it seems to do what I would like to do, although I've just started testing it.

The question is, how to get rid of that darn target at the destination??? I made a little test trip and it worked fine. So I deleted the entire trip. But the red "pin" with the target in it remained at the destination. I looked all over to try to figure out how to get rid of it. Finally I exited Basecamp and came back in.

There's gotta be a better way to clear that destination point!

    No answer to this?

I guess the answer is that you have to leave BaseCamp and then re-enter it. I sure hope there is a better solution in the next release of BaseCamp.

Tried to use Trip Planner. Entering a starting point and a destination was a real pain. Should be able to select points from the map to populate these fields. I tried to enter "Ed" in the destination field (I have a waypoint called Ed) and Trip Planner took 2 minutes while it appeared to list every "Ed" it could find in the world.

Trip Planner concept sounds good. This Beta version needs a lot intuitive interface work. I will look at it again when a notification is received that it has been updated. From my perspective it is unusable in its current state.

Flying really is just an interface in trip planner allowing you to choose airports and even search for flights. Under the hood, however, these are simply Direct routes. The best thing to do if it does revert back to your default profile is just choose direct to correct that. Setting up a flying trip does not override your default profile setting, and so changes will revert to that, but it is easily fixed by changing that leg back to Direct. I hope that answers your question.

I was not able to reproduce this. Are you seeing this still in version 4.2.1 of BaseCamp or did you only see this in the Beta?

We will be releasing an update in the coming weeks. We are aware of some of these issues and we are working on them. Thank you for your feedback!

    Hi
i'm testing the Trip Planner for Hiking Activity with TrekMap Italia V3 Pro, and i have to say that it is not display realist duration time of the activity.
For example if i have to go from "Rifugio marinelli" to "Monte Coglians", I already know that it will take me 5 hours more or less for the roundtrip, but the trip planner shows me 1 hour and 2 minutes..maybe the TripPlanner is not for hiking activities yet?
But as far a si can see, all hiking activities are wrong in time trip calculation
btw could be a nice feature!
