Problem with creating route, shaping points become destinations when loaded into GPS

Hi all,

Where am I going wrong? I have created a route using the New Route tool. I want to follow a route of my choosing so I created the route by clicking points along the route, mostly at intersections.

Once I have my route created I open the route dialog and set each way point between the start and finish to Don't Alert (shaping point only) Everything looks great in BC. When I load this into my 2595LMT each way point becomes a destination. The route only shows from the start point to the first way point. From there my GPS wants to route me back to the start point. Sometimes it will create the next leg of the trip but not till I have driven well beyond my way point. This being the case I have to remember which way to turn at each intersection so the unit will create the next leg. Doesn't that defeat the purpose of using a GPS?? I found a workaround by creating my shaping points a distance before or after the intersection so that I am going in the correct direction while the GPS creates the next leg.

There must be something I am doing wrong otherwise I have wasted $200 updating to a GPS I can load custom routes into.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

Just got an email back from Garmin saying that they have fixed the problem with the sat-nav re-calculating a custom uploaded route to the newer models, so maybe it works more like it used to now?
  • Yes, it´s fixed. FW 7.90 and nüvi 3590.

    Unsatified with Garmin.

Thanks for the clarity. I've been a die hard Garmin fan for years but it looks like that's going to change.

So have I been a die-hard Garmin fan for dozens of years. Started with the "GPS III Plus" then Nuvi 760. Both these units had great route planners. Could define many waypoints for the route so one could decide the exact route one intended to take Not necessarily shortest or fastest. Kept showing the next waypoint after passing one, giving time andor distance. GPS III even gave list of next 4 - 6 waypoints and estimated arrival time.

Since my 760 had dead battery and Garmin could not / would not replace they sold me a 2555. With the new Basecamp map the unit has become completely useless for me does not have those basic facilities. I have spent hours on the phone with Garmin but getting the run around and no solution other that to purchase a different unit which they cant promise doing the things I need.

Now going to study what TomTom, Magellan etc have to offer
  • You've resurrected an old thread.

The 2555 uses the older style 'trip planner'. From the 2013 models onwards the trip planner is far more like the older style 'route planner' but IMO better. I now run a 2508 which is a 2013 model.

You see the full route on your nuvi, and there is no pause to recalculate when you get to a viapoint. They also accept 'shaping points' from Basecamp or you can change viapoints to shaping points and vice versa in the trip planner app on the nuvi itself. Shaping points do not alert and you can skip them if you wish, with no further action needed on your part. This means the user can choose whether a point must be visited or whether it's one that he/she doesn't mind missing. For delivery drivers for example your nuvi will nag you to hit a viapoint and not allow you to miss it, vital if you have to go there. Equally for most on my vias they are simply shaping points, which is how I generally set them. This means if I choose to detour I can do so without having to worry. Best of both worlds.

Time to destination, time to viapoints etc are all available on screen should you wish to display them. Here's how I have mine set:

The 4 fields on the right are user configurable from a very wide choice.

I have a 1490 that uses the older style 'route planner' but wouldn't return to that now, the newer trip planner is far more flexible. Try and get your 2555 exchanged for a newer model, you won't be disappointed.
