GPSMAP 60CS screen cluttered by route point labels

I have the issue described in this old thread.

I've started using MapSource 6 years ago and moved to BaseCamp about a year ago. This same issue occurred with MapSource--and it was an issue that would auto-resolve and then reappear depending on the latest release. With the last version of MapSource I used, the routes I created would have big blue flags for every point, so when loaded on my little handheld 60CS, the screen was cluttered with blue flags. I had gotten into the habit of:

  • Export route as GPX file
  • Use text editor to repace "Flag, Blue" with "Waypoint"
  • Import back into MapSource

Apparently "Waypoint" was a small dot icon instead of a big blue flag.

The problem I'm having now is that when I load the route--say with 248 points--every point displays it's name label on my little 60CS screen. In MapSource, there was a way to select all points and indicate to only show the icon--not that it always worked! I can't find this option for route points in BaseCamp.

I sure hope someone knows how I can solve this. It's unclear to me if it's an issue in BaseCamp or a matter of setting in my 60CS unit. I've searched all the menus for anything related with no change.

Thanks!

Yes, I restarted Basecamp between each change of the registry, and though it did change the symbols on Basecamp, nothing happened and I still had the blue pins on my eTrex.

I just checked my gpx file created with Basecamp (I don't use Map Source) and the "Flag, Blue" or "Pin, Blue" occurrences don't exist in my file and are already correctly named "Waypoint".

Maybe a solution for those with older models would be to edit the gpx file as explained in the first post, and in the text editor instead of replacing "Flag, Blue" by "waypoint" , replace it by the name of a symbol present on your device that you won't use. Then add a pink square (as I did for my eTrex) with the name of that symbol in the custom symbols folder of your device.

I really don't know if it will work or if it will be of any use, that's just an idea I had right off the top of my head.

I was going to suggest doing this... BTW did you ever "recalculate" the route(s) after changing the registry setting? Unless you did the old "Waypoint" symbol would still be in effect. I made that point in one of my posts.

The only thing I can think of, offhand, is that the eTrex "Waypoint" symbol is a blue pin and not undefined as such.

BTW you could, if you wish import the GDB file attached to my thread

    MapSource 6.16.3 Waypoint Symbols

and then send the waypoints to your unit to see what symbols you get.
  • OK i fixed the problem for my eTrex!
So I thought if I could get rid of that damn blue pin symbol, it wouldn't cause a problem.
In order to do that I created a 32 pixels width square completly magenta (see explanations HERE), named it "Pin, Blue.bmp" and put it in the custom symbols folder of my GPS.

Now gone those damn blue pins that were cluttering my screen, the only drawback is I cant use that symbol anymore, I hope basecamp won't use it for something else.

Nice workaround. Any chance you could post the symbol here or PM it to me?

    Hi,

    Here it is Sussamb:

    @Stuart

After changing the registry setting I didn't recalculate the route but instead I created new ones each time. But your right, the "old" symbols are still present on the route I had changed the registry values.

I didn't had the chance to try your GDB file. I'll try it when I'll have the time ;)

Exactly. Seems something went wrong there.

Just to be clear, here is what I done and what happened:

Before changing the registry values, the via point were displayed as tiny black dot (in Basecamp).
Then I changed the registry value 12 to 45 and the via points turned into, small green dots, but only for the new routes I created. The routes I had already created kept the tiny black dot symbol.
Now I reverted back the registry values and the via points are tiny black dot symbol again but the ones I had created while I changed the registry still have he small green dot symbol.

So I don't know if something went wrong. Except by changing the registry values, I didn't find how to change the symbols of the via points in Basecamp.

    @Sussamb
    You're welcome ;)

Nothing went wrong. Unless you recalculate or recreate a route whatever symbols it's using are retained after changing the registry setting.

Also the route(s) should've been deleted in your eTrex 30 and resent to ensure that change went into effect.
  • Just for info a recalc in BC doesn't change the icon. You need to redo the routes if you want them to show the new icon. At least that's what happened when I tried it.

Hmmm, it worked for me when I tried a week or two ago. Mind you I did it on three machines with MapSource and two with BaseCamp. Perhaps my memory is going/gone...
