When I tried starting BaseCamp today I got the following error message:

App: BaseCamp

OS: Windows 7 (64-bit) Service Pack 1
Processor: x86, Processor Level: 6, Processors:4, Model: 42 Stepping: 7, RAM: 4106416
GDI_IMAGEUTILS.CPP-716-4.1.1.0

Active Map Product: Unknown

Installed Map Products:

Map Name: Globale Karte (Garmin Product)
Map Id: 133758977
Map Version: 2.0
Map Type: Bundle
Custom Drawn Map: No
Digital Elevation Model: No

.NET Versions:
.NET FW 1.0 not installed.
.NET FW 1.1 not installed.
.NET FW 2.0 with SP2 installed
.NET FW 3.0 with SP2 installed
.NET FW 3.5 with SP1 installed

OpenGL Version: OpenGL Version Unknown

Attached File: MiniDump

I have submitted a few error reports from the program.

I tried the following, to no avail:

- Reboot
- Delete the database, so that BC would have to create new one
- Uninstall all maps
- Uninstall all Garmin products, delete all remaining files, delete all registry settings, reboot, reinstall BaseCamp
- Start BaseCamp with no peripherals attached to laptop (thought that it might be a USB device problem)
  • Have you saved the exe file to your PC and run it from there? That often works best, there can be issues running it directly from the website.

Today Windows installed KB2670838 automatically (last time the update was still optional). It was a "sub update" of another update, so I could not even see it in the list and unselect it.

Of course BC was broken again, and I had to uninstall the update again. Please fix your programming. I cannot avoid that update forever. Thank you.

I was also getting this error so I uninstalled KB2570838 as described - MapSource and BaseCamp both started working again. Everything worked for a while.

But, when I installed the new Internet Explorer 10, I found it reinstalled KB2570838 - so everything quit working again. I uninstalled the KB2570838 update again - it is now working but dropped me back to IE9.

Looks like Microsoft updated the WIC but Garmin software doesn't recognize the new version so thinks there is an error.

Garmin - as CYPHERPUNKS3834 has already said, I can't avoid IE10 forever - please fix your programming!!

    Thanks

Easy answer - don't use Internet Explorer!

There are far better browsers out there for free - faster and more secure. I've used Firefox for years now and would never go back to IE. In fact I've never updated the version of IE that came with my Windows 7 machine - probably never used it.

If you haven't used IE for years, then how do you know?

Not an option. I agree that IE is bad. But we are not just talking about the browser here. For example IE also supplies important ActiveX components that other software relies on. That's why IE cannot simply be removed from Windows.

I have never voluntarily updated IE, and Microsoft has offered IE updates always just in an optional way. But this time they actually installed it fully automatically, which probably means that this fixes critical security issues. Therefore such an update should be installed even if you do not use IE directly.

Also, I am not sure whether KB2570838 really came with IE, as there were other updates installed at the same time.
"][email protected]: Are you 100% sure that this was part of the IE update?

Can't understand why it was updated automatically - my machine is fully up to date regarding updates and the version of IE on there is 8. I have also had a look for KB2570838 and there is no sign of that either. The only thing I can think of is that you must have some bit of software on your machine that is requiring this update.

Just because I don't use IE doesn't mean I can't open it to check what version it is.

I have my Windows Update settings set to check for updates only and I always untick the box for anything that is not critical or useful before downloading and updating.

I am running Win 7 SP1 on a Lenovo TP X220T and had KB2670838 installed; in that configuration neither Basecamp (4.1.2) nor Garmin Express (2.1.12) would load / run. I also had problems with this MS update on my desktop system where it broke several other apps. In each case, uninstalling KB2670838 fixed the problem so that my apps (including Basecamp and Garmin Express) work normally. It is an optional update according to MS; I won't reinstall it until I hear from online sources that the problems it causes are resolved. This forum, after a bit of searching, was key in helping me resolve this problem. Thanks to everyone who makes it work.

KB2670838 is required for IE10. It most definitely does affect some PC's with hardware incompatibility. The link below lists some of the models that it screws up.
