Using US Nuvi map with Basecamp

I have a UK Nuvi 2495LMT but will be travelling in the US soon and want to buy US maps.
I thought I'd buy CityNavigator for the lower 49 states. When I look at Basecamp documentation it says that I can only use maps that show as compatible in the "requirements" tab and it isn't mentioned, so it's clear it won't work.

So what do I need to do to get the US maps to work on both the Nuvi and Basecamp?

With MapSource and my QuestII it was fairly easy. I just installed the US maps on the computer and transferred what I wanted to the Quest, and could use them on MapSource for route planning, and on the Quest.

(I've asked this question of Garmin support twice in the past four weeks, but had no response).

We're pretty much the same this side of the pond in the UK ... and a hard reset could lose all the OPs favourites etc that I'd guess he would have carefully loaded for his forthcoming trip :)

But if he has those in Basecamp he can send them over.

Well he could do loads of things, but as the US and UK generally use the same system of measurement where it might affect his nuvi there's really no need :)

No they don't. The American Gallon is not the same as an Imperial Gallon. They also measure height in feet not metres.

All I was trying to do was pass on a useful tip. Whether he chooses to act upon it is up to him. From personal experience of travelling over 12,000 miles (not kilometres) in the States, I found it very useful!

Having lived in the US and now the UK I understand the point you're making but I did say where it might affect his nuvi. Height and gallons don't really impact on that, and in any case I still measure height in feet :)

You've made your tip ... the OP I'm sure can decide whether he wants to take it or not.

BC will work with the map in the way I've described :)

But only works if you have the Nuvi or the memory card connected to the computer. That's not really what I meant.

Buy the City Navigator maps on DVD

Thanks ... but, as mentioned further down, that's almost twice the price (although still cheaper than the maps were for my old Quest)

Just a tip given to me by Garmin Support. Before you arrive in th USA, do a Factory reset and when the unit asks for your location say 'USA'. Obviously your new maps should already be installed. This will then default the unit to the American system of measurement, e.g. gallons, height etc. You don't have to do this but I promise you it helps a lot.

Thanks for the thought, but it does seems a pretty pointless thing to do. The Nuvi can be set to display imperial or metric, so I can have height in metres or feet (and US metres and feet are the same as ours). Yes, there's a difference between US/UK gallons but my Nuvi doesn't do MPG so not really relevant. I don't really think there's any "etc"
