This may be the wrong place to post this, but I could not find a better place.

I have a Garmin 2720. I plan all my trips with BC with the waypoints I need and then transfer the route to my StreetPilot 2720. This way I can zoom in and see the details of the route on BC before I transfer the route. I LOVE the Garmin StreetPilot 2720 because of this feature. My son has a different Garmin (I do not know the model) but he can not transfer from MapSource or Base Camp to his Garmin.

I want to purchase a new Garmin that will allow me to use the 3D feature of the new maps. I am look to purchase a use Garmin on eBay. Any suggestions on which model I should be looking at?
  • Sounds like you're rejecting the 1490 because it's not as big as a 2720

You may have to accept that to get the other requirements you seem to want :)

I do not need a "pocket size - portable unit"

Well most Garmin auto units are now "pocket size - portable units". Technology has allowed devices to be smaller so they no longer need to be 2720 sized just as mobile phones no longer need to be the size of a brick.

That said Garmin does make some "truck" units that are larger. You'll pay for them though.

If you don't care about size and want advanced features, take a look at the Montana 600. It is certainly not the cheapest model (you need to buy maps and the auto mount separately) but it has proper support for computer created routes and can store 200 of them on the device. Also has many advanced features that aren't available on the Nuvi series. You can customize every aspect of the Montana to meet your personal preference.

I would like to make a case for reasonable expectations. If you have an upper end unit like the 2720, you can't expect a basic unit like the nuvi to replace it or have all the features.
    From garmin.com for the 2720:
Suggested Retail Price: $969.22 U.S.D. (for domestic US market only)

The desire to replace it with a nuvi is understandable, the deficit with the 2720 is that it has no internal battery, so cannot be used as a hand held unit as the nuvi can, but you will have to move to the top end nuvis to get the functionality of the 2720.

The fact that the 2720 has NO internal battery is a PLUS for me. . . :o

The main "plus" for the 2720 (and others in that series) is the remote control. Or am I the only one that enjoys that feature that Garmin has so thoughtlessly eliminated in their more recent models?

I have NEVER use the remote. Why use the remote when I can touch the screen. However if the touch screen would stop working, I my did out my remote.
  • I prefer to not have to hunch forward over the steering wheel to touch the screen when I can simply point and click with the remote. Ditto for leaning down if the unit is resting on a center console. It's just my own preference.

Ditto... I loved having the remote on the 2710.. You can do things by feel while driving.. while having only a touch screen is a significant additional distraction factor if you try to do anything while driving..

It was time to replace the aging 2710 so bought the top of the line 3597LMTHD to replace it.. The are functions the 2710 (additional on screen fields, remote control, more granularity in expressing personal preferences for routing) that I miss on the 3597...
