Zumo 350LM lacks necessary track importing and manipulation capability

The recently released (Q3 2012) Garmin Zumo 350LM appears to lack track import capability. Independent testing as well as discussions with Garmin Dealer Tech Support confirm this.

The Zumo 350 tested was updated with the only OS service pack update to date.

Testing shows:

1. Sample track created in either Basecamp 4.0.2 or Mapsource 6.16.3 and exported to the device is not resolved. No record of any track shows when the device is on. The file sent is queued as a "Temp" file in the /GPX folder but no further manipulation or import is done in the device.
2. Routes are correctly resolved and appear.
3. Waypoints are correctly resolved and appear.
4. TracBack feature works properly.

The entire Zumo model line as of date has allowed for advanced track importation and manipulation. However, the Zumo 350LM has departed from this advanced and necessary feature routinely used by off and on road motorcycle enthusiasts. Other disciplines use tracks on Zumo's as well.

Questions?

1. Was this a design feature that was purposly deleted? If so why?
2. Can a firmware or software upgrade be pushed to the device to reinstate this functionality to mirror other Zumo models if warranted?
3. Are there any current or immediate workarounds or alternates available?

It adds a number to the end of the route name, so your large "route" becomes route1, route2, route3, etc. However, I would not trust that everything made it in. You should confirm that the last one ends at the correct finish point. If not, then use BaseCamp or something to chop your route into smaller pieces before you pull it into the 350.

Yes I know that they get an ending number.
But they onlu Count from 1 to 10 in secuence and then make a jump to 41 where is the other 31 tracks?
And this worked on my 500 why not on this new one?

No idea, except to say that one can never assume that something that works on one unit will work on a different model. I think you should contact Garmin support and ask for a fix. I have asked them for similar before. Maybe if enough people ask, they will do it.

Is there an actual gap in the route data, or does the file numbering simply jump?

I think there is a way either when importing or converting to cut down the number of points. I also think (but am not sure) that you can add shaping points (instead of "via" or waypoints") that don't make it chop the route up, using the insert tool.

Do you actually have multiple tracks? If so...

    Joining Tracks

You can join two or more tracks into one continuous track.

Hold Ctrl on your keyboard, and select two or more tracks.
Select Edit > Advanced > Join Selected Tracks.

You need to put the Zumo350 into Mass Storage Mode to be able to do anything useful with it like transfer Tracks4Africa Maps and any other unlocked maps you may have. You can transfer waypoints (favourites) tracks and routes from your PC using Mapsource.
To go into Mass storage mode, go to the volume screen and tap and hold the top right corner of the screen for 10 secs. You will se a diagnostic menu. Scroll down to MTP settings and change it so Mass Storage. You can then see it as a USB storage device. Sorry only works with Windows.
  • Exactly right. This also applies to all nuvis from the 2013 models onwards, like my 2508. Basecamp can send do not alert/shaping points to these devices which don't affect the overall waypoint limit, although on the nuvi the waypoint limit is 50.
  • With the latest firmware update the zumo 3x0 got the possibility to import tracks, so the original question of this thread has been answered too...

Yes, I've been meaning to come back to this thread! In my opinion, with the ability to view and manipulate tracks, the 350LM is now a great unit.

There's only one more feature that needs to take that unit from being great to perfect. I really wish you could adjust the width of the track lines that display on the map. Routes have a perfect width, but for some reason tracks display as a thin line that most times can blend in with the road that it may be overlaying. ATTENTION GARMIN: Please make this one minor change it will make a world of difference for making tracks easier to see.
