Migrating to 2595-LMT from eTrex

OK, I realize this is rather device specific, but there aren't any appropriate sub-forums for that, and I do use basecamp.... hoping someone can help get me up to speed on the deltas between these two devices.

My 2nd ever garmin device arrives today. Its a Nuvi 2595-LMT. I figure I'll relegate the eTrex to off-road use only (no need for road routing any more), and the 2595 will be my dedicated truck/auto device.

So, about me and GPS:
On a scale of 1 to 10 (10 being expert) I think I'm about an 8 on the eTrex and 7 on Basecamp, 9 on GoogleEarth. I've futzed around with OSM and GPSFileDepot maps on the eTrex. I've got a bunch of POIs on it (via POI loader) from poi-factory.com and gps-data-team.com on a pretty big sd-card in the eTrex. I keep at least a dozen "favorite" waypoints on it, as well as a couple common routes. I usually run the device with active tracking enabled. Managing all of this data on the eTrex has been a PITA, and some things I rarely update (though they need it) because of the hassle.

So, what do I need to be mindful of when bringing this new 2595 into my "network" with Basecamp to co-exist with the eTrex? What are some subtle key differences in these two devices that are not readily apparent or obvious (e.g. what might I miss that the Nuvi can do because I've been hamstrung by the eTrex, or, how might the Nuvi behave radically different "behind the scenes"?). Should I put my most-used waypoints and routes on the Nuvi? Should I NOT?

I'm excited about my new device, but I'm worried I'll muck it up or miss out on some neat tricks because I've been 'eTrexed' for so long! I figure I'll have to change my mindset a bit when working on the Nuvi (and probably how I think of the eTrex too).

:)
  • It'll 'co-exist' as you put it with your Etrex without any problem. I ran an Etrex Legend H, and now an Etrex 20, with my nuvi 1310 and 1490 without any problem. You can hook both up to BC and copy from one to the other without any issues.

The biggest difference I guess you'll notice is that road navigation using the nuvi is way superior to trying to do it with the Etrex!

Good info... yes road nav is crummy on the eTrex, and I've also noticed that road routes from basecamp on the etrex don't work quite the same. Is that also true for the Nuvi? Should I let the Nuvi calculate routes? Or calc it on BC and transfer to Nuvi with confidence it'll get used in the car?
  • Nuvi will recalculate any route sent to it based on the settings in it, so if I plan any route in BC I always check it once it's in my nuvi, and add any necessary via points.

Should I be able to delete individual waypoints and such directly from the Nuvi using Basecamp?

And is it normal that waypoints I tranfer show as "blue flag" when viewed on the device from Basecame despite the Icon I have it set as in Basecamp?

No, you should not be able to delete anything from a Nuvi via BaseCamp.

The icon should be displayed correctly. I cannot reproduce this with 4.0.0.4. How do you get that to happen? I tried to send a waypoint with a gas station symbol to a Nuvi 2495 and an SD card in a card reader and they show up with the correct symbol for me.
  • Is the icon available on the nuvi? If not it'll default to the blue flag ;)

I'm on BC 3.3.3 (don't have the fortitude to try the beta)

As for the symbols that the Nuvi supports, I don't know. My collection I sent to it has about 25 different symbols... surely ONE of them would work.

One major difference is that none of the Nuvi series can display tracks that you send from Basecamp (or any other external device). It can only display the active track that is being recorded on the GPS itself.

You will also find that topo maps don't look all that great, and some of the features (especially certain map POI's) won't show at all. The shaded terrain in Garmin's 100k and 24k topo maps will also show at all zoom levels and cannot be disabled. This can make the map hard to read (smaller roads tend to vanish into the background).

I'd have though so, but the only way of checking is to look at the symbols available on your nuvi and try sending one of those from BC. If that doesn't work I'm not sure why, as BC sends the symbols to my 1490.

I installed a Topo from GPS-file-Depot and it doesnt show anything useful, unless I turn off the routable CN map - bleh. I guess I'll remove that map.

I've been using tracks to display things like property lines and such on my eTrex. I'm going to try converting them to Routes and see what shows up in the Nuvi.... and figure out whether they are useful as such or not.

Hmm, well, as it turns out (I had a hard time figuring out how to SAVE a location).... The Nuvi 2595 has no place (I could find) in the save dialog to assign an icon/symbol. I guess "blue flag" is the only choice >shrugs<
