Any scheduled maintenance on the Garmin Adventure servers will occur Tuedays at 7:45am CT. Most maintenance down times will be less than 20 min. If you are experiencing an issue with adventures during this time, please try again later.

More on adventures here: adventures.garmin.com

New firmware with adventure support has been released for:

Montana
62 Series (includes 78 series)
Oregon x50 Series
Dakota

“Garmin Adventures” is a new feature that allows you to easily share trips and photos and lets you find Adventures by other Garmin users. You can download a track from your GPS to BaseCamp, add some photos, videos and annotations; upload the trip as an Adventure and then share it via the Garmin Adventures web site with friends and family. BaseCamp allows you to author Adventures, and use a playback feature so you can re-live your trip. In the near future, Garmin devices will add support for Adventures as well.

The BaseCamp 4.0.0.4 gives you an early preview into Garmin Adventures. Please let us know how you like it and what you think we can improve. BaseCamp 4.0.0.4 will lead you to short surveys that will help us make Adventures a better product. If you have a minute to spare, please fill out these surveys. Thanks.

Finding Adventures

You can use BaseCamp’s find feature to locate other Adventures. You can download Adventures that you would like to take a closer look at. If you'd like to follow an adventure, just transfer it to your device.

Adventure Display and Playback

You can view details about an Adventure, and use the Playback feature. The Playback experience will be better if you have a Topo map and BirdsEye imagery. Check out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8al8CHqOBmg for an example.

Creating an Adventure

You can create an Adventure from any track, either from My Collection or directly from your device. BaseCamp will locate photos and waypoints in the vicinity of the Adventure track. You can add annotations, YouTube videos and additional photos. It is important that you enter a good description so other can better experience your Adventure. Note that you can pick from the prepopulated list of activities or simply enter your own.

Each Adventure has its own database, so you can play around with your Adventure’s data without making any changes in your data in My Collection.

Publishing an Adventure

Once you are happy with your adventure, you can publish it. You can share a published adventure with friends and family (http://adventures.garmin.com/en-US/by/eracerz/hanakapiai-falls-trail-hike-2), you can link the adventure to your favorite social media site, you can use it to back-up your trip and download it again on a different machine and you can help fellow Adventurers find interesting stuff to do.

I have v4.50 in my 78s and I have just discovered a major problem with that version. The Photo Viewer application (a Main Menu item) is now gone from the unit. aaaaaaagh! I keep a lot of photos in the Garmin>JPEG folder and they used to be able viewed on the gps screen.

Now they can't! They can only be viewed if I connect the gps to my computer and look at them via Irfanview or some other Windows photo application. As most of the photos I have in the gps are spoilers or photos of intricate trail maps that I use to help find geocaches the loss of the Photo Viewer is hugely felt.

I note that the Main Menu now sports 2 icons for Adventures and I suspect one of the garmin gurus who has been responsible for that appaling development has cocked things up by usurping the screen space previously occupied by the Photo Viewer.

v4.40 was a complete cockup when Garmin introduced Adventures and v4.50 was an endeavour to fix things. However, they have stuffed that up too.

I would like to move back to v4.30. I know that that will involve the loss of all my settings, but I am prepared to have to reset everything.

The only copy of v4.30 that I have been able to find is a gcd file that needs WebUpdater to install. But how does one force WebUpdater to install an OLD version?

I have emailed Garmin about the loss of Photo Viewer but have had no response. Last night I checked with my brother who has 4.50 on his 62s and he confirmed that he has no Photo Viewer but has 2 icons for Adventures in the 62s Main Menu!!!

Two issues here - the faulty version 4.5 update and is it possible to revert to an older version in the meantime please?

I apologize, but please contact Product Support about this one. This doesn't sound like a BaseCamp issue.

I tried out the track and it makes no difference. The photo is still showing up for me.

So I would echo BABJ615 suggestion. Is there any difference if you import the original photo to BaseCamp vs. importing the photo that was edited by IrfanView? It looks like the image is being properly sent to the device, but then it's somehow unhappy about it and doesn't display it. It's just strange that I cannot get my device to do what yours is doing.

Thanks to you and BABJ615. I'll try to import unresized images with the Adventure I anticipate creating this weekend, and report back. If that indeed is the problem, it's a very weird problem, given that you are able to work with the resized image without difficulty.

In any event, I will give it a try. If that doesn't work, I'll try a different computer and see if that makes a difference.

Okay, here is my promised report.

On Saturday, I created an Adventure with one track and several waypoints. The track was created in BaseCamp with the track drawing tool. On Sunday, I completed the Adventure and took 13 photos during the Adventure. Back home, I replaced the track I had drawn in BaseCamp with the track recorded by my Oregon 450, and I imported the unresized images from my digital camera. I then deleted the Adventure I had previously transferred to my device, and transferred the edited Adventure (with the actual track, and unresized photos) to my device. I was unable to see the photos other than thumbnail versions, as before.

I then resized the images, like last time, retransferred the Adventure to my device, and was still unable to see the pictures. I then published the Adventure, downloaded the published Adventure, and transferred the downloaded published Adventure to my devide, and was able to see the pictures. So the problem persists.

I've also noticed that, sometimes, an Adventure transferred to the internal memory of my device don't appear on my device after I've transferred the Adventure. This happens sometimes, but not always, and I can't figure out any pattern to this problem. I haven't transferred any Adventures to the memory card of my device since I'm aware that is a known issue.

It appears that there is some disconnect between BaseCamp and my device when it comes to the images, and sometimes the Adventures themselves. I see that BABJ615 has reported similar issues. The issue is either with BaseCamp or my device; I doubt very much the issue is with my images. I look forward to being able to further contribute to a fix for these issues.

I also have a question. I'm not sure how the device is supposed to behave when I choose to complete an already created Adventure using the device (i.e., by touching the "Start" button at the beginning of the Adventure). I was expecting the device to take me through each Waypoint and let me 'check off' completed parts of the Adventure, or something similar to that. Instead, all the device compass and pointer did was point me to the next waypoint. I'm not sure how this is any different than navigating any track that happens to have waypoints located near it. Perhaps I'm missing something?

    Thanks!

Thanks Falagar for your input. I know this isn't a Basecamp issue but it is an issue for the upgrade to Adventures as a whole.

I've since updated to v4.50 and still got 2 Adventures icons. I contacted Garim support who suggested simply using the Change/Add/Remove menu item function to get rid of one of the Adventures icons (no mention of the updater being faulty!). This works of course.

I'd previously removed the View Photos menu item from the list along with a couple of other funtions I'll not use - so didn't notice any other problem. I've just checked my GPSmap 62s and the View Photos item is still there if I want to Add it back into the menu. So the update installer has a flaw - but it can be overcome (at least on my unit). If the installer has completely deleted a menu item then that's really bad programming.

Multiple tracks shown during a single Adventure ?

I created a few Adventures from my existing data. I understand why you are basing the Adventure "container" on Tracks but a single Adventure may have many Tracks and I would like for the "collective" distance to be displayed on the Adventure Viewer. As it is now only the initial Track distance is displayed and that is misleading info.

When I ride my Motorcycle (2001 Kawi C-10), I turn off and back on my Garmin when I make different stops during my travel. However, I want to show multiple tracks during Playback as part of one Adventure.

How can I get Playback to show multiple tracks in a single 'Adventure'?

How do I show stops and starts during the playback if I cannot join multiple tracks together?

I look forward to someone posting a useful reply.

From the website you can only look at the featured adventures. If you want to look at more, you'll have to download BaseCamp and search for adventures.

The website's functionality is very likely to be expanded in the future.

Currently, you'd have to join the tracks together and make it a single track in the adventure. Your adventure can contain multiple tracks, but only the main track is being considered for playback.

    Thank you for the update!

As you have experienced, randomly Adventure photos are not properly transferred to the GPSr. As you are experiencing this issue on a device different than mine, I must now assume this is purely a BaseCamp issue.

I have also sent multiple inquiries to Garmin asking what exact behavior should be expected when "START" (ing) and Adventure. As you pointed out, currently, NOTHING happens! I expect the unit would begin navigating to the primary track included with the Adventure, then along said track, with information about waypoints and photos included with the active Adventure presented as they are encountered.

I have yet to receive any reply from Garmin regarding this question.

    You're welcome.

Yes, my experience, when navigating an Adventure, is that my device does navigate me along the primary track, and the "distance to next" is the distance to the next waypoint that's generated by the device whenever someone uses the device to navigate a track. But, as I said, that's no different that simply asking the device to navigate any track that happens to have waypoints nearby. I'm hoping that Garmin can update the firmware on Adventure-compatible devices to treat the elements of an Adventure as a checklist, and to more explicitly 'take you through' the Adventure as if the device was your guide.

I'm looking forward to our suggested improvements.
