Must I first sign in to my.garmin or does it dl without being signed on

I DID PURCHASED FOR OWN DL ONLINE

I am on a firewall, but gave BC full permission
Are there any other system files BC uses to dl or connect maybe

Looks like your post got mixed up with my quote. :)

If you had Birdseye on a card in your Oregon, that card will not work on your Montana. You need to delete all the files from the card, then select all the previously downloaded BirdsEye in Basecamp and send it to the card again.

If you still have the Oregon subscription you will now have two subscriptions and you must choose the Montana subscription before sending the files to the card.

    Montana and Birdseye

Hi, First thanks for reply,I have tried your suggestion deleted sd card, downloaded Birdseye to clean card in my registered Montana 600 but it then connects with Garmin to check, and gives the message invalid device, so I paid for another 600kl and loaded to a card in the Montana and it's fine, it seems it will only load in the device connected at the time of purchase so with my existing maps that were downloaded with my Oregon they only seem to work, any suggestions?

What "flavor" of BirdsEye are you using? My comments relate to satellite imagery subscriptions available in the US: https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=70144

You pay a flat fee of $30 per year for unlimited downloads of this imagery. Are you using BirdsEye select? I don't know what "I paid for another 600kl" means.

    Montana and Birdseye

Hi, Yes in the U.K. it is Birdseye Select, you purchase 600 klm and pay £19.00 to download then you can cut your own area of 1:25k map.

  • Birdseye Select cannot be switched from one device to another. It's a map, and like most Garmin mapping it's locked to the device you purchased it for. That's why the mapping you've downloaded for your Oregon won't work on the Montana.

I'm not sure why Garmin gave it the name Birdseye Select as it's nothing like the Birdseye imagery available and just seems to cause confusion ;)

That's interesting. If you read this whole thread you will see that all Birdseye imagery is locked to a single device, so that's not the issue here. But the locking takes place when you send the imagery to the GPS. So, if you have two subscriptions, you can send the same thing to each GPS without downloading it twice.

So you can't just move a memory card between your Montana and your Oregon, but you should be able to send the same downloaded data to either device. If you have multiple subscriptions, you should be able to choose either the Oregon or the Montana when you send it.

I'm surprised this would be different using BirdsEye Select, but maybe that's the case. I suggest you contact Garmin Support and see what they say.

  • Think that's why it's confusing to call it Birdseye Select.

You can't simply 'buy' another subscription with Select. You buy the download of the map, and when you do you have to specify the device and it's then locked to that device, which is why the OP can't do what he tried to do :)

That is also the case with satellite imagery. But you first download it to Basecamp where it can be used on your computer. Then you select all or part of it to send to the GPS. Is that not the case with Select?
  • Yes it is, but unlike the imagery it's not a subscription where (as I understand it) you get as much as you want to download (?). You get the 600 sq kms that the OP referred to. That gets you a 1:25,000 topo map, or maps, of up to 600 sq kms.

And, as you've said, it's locked to the device. You can't then pay so you can download that to another device, you need to buy another 600 sq kms ;)

Incidentally, while Birdseye imagery seems good value for money Birdseye Select is expensive (very) at £20 for every 600 sq kms. I've only got £40 worth loaded, and then only because I got it free with the purchase of my Etrex 20.

Ok, I understand (sort of). :p

That is really pricey, considering that BirdsEye Topo gives you unlimited 1:24 USGS and 1:50 Canadian maps for $30 (~ £19.25). They must be paying more for the data. USGS maps are free, so Garmin only needs to put them online in their .jnx format.

Making your own custom maps would be a good alternative. My own experience shows that 3m/pixel is a good resolution for USGS 24k maps. Using the maximum size of 1024x1024 pixels, each tile would cover 9.4 sq km. The Montana allows custom maps as large as 500 tiles, so you could cover 4,700 sq km. If you could download scans of your OS maps for free (?) that would be the equivalent of £160 worth of BirdsEye Select and it would not be locked to any GPS. :)
