Map File |names

I am trying to load additional map files onto my Oregon 450. I have read numerous posts that state that any_name.img should be recognized as a distinct map by the 450.

I have used Basecamp to download two different map sets (NW topo and NW trails) to the 450. Both download OK and both are named, by Basecamp, gmapsupp so they overwrite one another. When I change the name (I am opening up the SD card on my laptop, opening up the garmin folder and re-naming the file) from gmapsupp to anything else (I've tried gmapsup1, gmapsupp.img, etc., etc.) the file is no longer recognized by the 450. It appears as if I can only have one map file downloaded from basecamp. I have other .img files on my SD card (i.e. ibycus topo 3.2.img, gmapsupp Eng) these show up nicely and these allow me to change the name and still work.

Am I doing something wrong?

Those those numbered .img files (like 30011100.img) are individual topo map sheets that work with (are used by - I don't profess to know how) the Ibycus Topo 3.2.img and all were downloaded directly to the SD Card - by the way, these do work perfectly in the Oregon as do the other files such as GMAPSUPP Eng.img which was also downloaded directly. The only real problem appears to be that my Oregon will only recognize a map file downloaded from MaInstall if the name is changed to gmapsupp.img.

For the sake of being thorough, I used a blank SD card on which I set up a blank folder named Garmin and wrote two different map file using MapInstall - both of these files ARE RECOGNIZED and DO WORK on the new SD card which has no other maps (i.e. the Ibycus set et al) but DO NOT get recognized when downloaded to the SD Card with the Ibycus et al files. Clearly (although they work perfectly by themselves and with other .img map files that are downloaded directly to the Oregon) either the Ibycus files or one or more of the other .img files that are on the SD card are somehow interfering with the Oregon's ability to recognize map files downloaded via MapInstall UNLESS they are named mapsupp.img.
    Go Figure!!

Well, first,THANKS VERY MUCH FOR STICKING WITH ME ON THIS ISSUE. It would seem that the issue is somewhat understood if not entirely resolved and clearly a work around is to not mix the directly loaded map files with the MapInstall files on the same SD Card unless the MapInstall file is named mapsupp.img.

From my point of view, I now consider the issue solved. Thanks again for everyone's assistance.

Do you know the total number of map tiles on your Ibycus Topo card? For an OR 450 there's a limit of 4000 tiles. For other ORs it's close to that.

I would suggest that you bundle all those ibycus files together using the free SendMap20 program which is a cgpsmapper utility. You can download it here (scroll down towards the bottom of the page): http://www.cgpsmapper.com/buy.htm

Run SendMap20, select all of the files with your mouse and drag them to the SendMap20 window which will add them to the list. You can then either send the resulting file directly to the GPS or save it on your computer as gmapsupp.img (or anything else) and copy it to the GPS.

That will greatly reduce the number of map files on the device, which might possibly be the problem. Just a wild guess, but it would certainly be a lot "cleaner" than having so many separate files.

SELDOM - I have selected and loaded into the Garmin folder on the SD card only 21 Ibycus files so I haven't overwhelmed the 450.

OSTROFF01 - excellent suggestion to tidy up the Ibycus files and thanks for the instructions on how to accomplish this, I'll give it a go.

I'll continue to play with this as time permits and if I learn anything new over the next week or so I'll post.

Just to be clear, I was talking about tiles (or map segments) not files. When I send a map product to my GPSr, a single gmapsupp.img could contain say 60 map segments.

Seldom - I see! tiles, not files. Is there a way to determine how many tiles are in a .img file?

I took OSTROFF01's advice and cleaned up my Ibycus files, bundled them into one .img file using SendMap20. Much tidier!! BUT, even MORE IMPORTANTLY, my original naming problem disappeared!! Map files using MapInstall are now recognized by my Oregon and they are still recognized when I rename them. BaseMap, MapInstall and my Oregon 450 are all working together as they should... WONDERFUL! :):)

I have re-learned (isn't it amazing how many times we have to remind ourselves to go back to first principles when trying to solve a problem) that, I should have tried to solve the problem, initially, using a blank SD Card - it would have saved a lot of time.

THANKS to OSTROFF01, SELDOM, SUSSAMB, RED90 & FALAGAR for taking part in this thread, I have learned a lot about my Oregon and about BaseCamp.

Great, glad that it worked. It's possible that the firmware just can't handle that many separate map files. I have seen other posts that suggested there was a limit to how many files you could use, but never anything definitive. Even if the firmware is supposed to support that many files, it's possible that the developers never tested it with 20+ files.

Now, for your next trick, you could use JaVaWa's Device Manager program to make the bundled ibycus map viewable in Basecamp. :)

Unfortunately, none that give an easy report. There may be an app for this, but I'm not familiar with it, and I've created a list as follows:

You can start gmaptool, browse to a gmapsupp.img and then click the "Info" button. The files with the "MPC" listed will be the tiles. To get a list of every MPC tile on the card copy and paste the MPC file names from the Info display or the Log display into a text editor like NotePad++ that will give you a line number for each line.

Be really careful with gmaptool unless you know a lot about making maps. It's pretty powerful and can do a lot for you or to you.

Actually I think SendMap20 will show you a list of the individual tiles in a gmapsupp.img file. May not work with all maps though.
