Map File |names

I am trying to load additional map files onto my Oregon 450. I have read numerous posts that state that any_name.img should be recognized as a distinct map by the 450.

I have used Basecamp to download two different map sets (NW topo and NW trails) to the 450. Both download OK and both are named, by Basecamp, gmapsupp so they overwrite one another. When I change the name (I am opening up the SD card on my laptop, opening up the garmin folder and re-naming the file) from gmapsupp to anything else (I've tried gmapsup1, gmapsupp.img, etc., etc.) the file is no longer recognized by the 450. It appears as if I can only have one map file downloaded from basecamp. I have other .img files on my SD card (i.e. ibycus topo 3.2.img, gmapsupp Eng) these show up nicely and these allow me to change the name and still work.

Am I doing something wrong?

removal of space & acceptable map file names

Eliminating the space in the map name did not help. The only way that I can get my 450 to recognize a BaseCamp downloaded map is to rename it mapsupp.

After downloading two map files, I can rename and place one mapsupp file on the unit's internal memory and then rename the other one mapsupp leaving it on the SD card and, in this way, I have two different map files that the 450 recognizes. But, with this workaround, I'm limited to two map sets downloaded from BaseCamp - only one of which can be a large file.

I did post earlier (don't know where it disappeared to) that I had found the error of my ways regarding downloading only a selected portion of a map set - I am now able to do this.

Clearly something strange is going on. You should contact Garmin support here - call instead of e-mailing. You will have to wait a long time on hold. Have your Oregon connected to your computer when you call. If needed, they can access it remotely to diagnose the problem.

more re Map File naming problem

I am still in the position where map files downloaded from BaseCamp must be renamed to mapsupp before they are recognized by my 450. I am helping a fellow hiker with downloads to her 450 and I am experiencing the same problem. In her case, she has purchased the Garmin Canada Topo v4 (I'm happy with my Ibycus) and when I download the Garmin map file to her 450, using BaseCamp, I can only get her 450 to recognize the map file if I rename it to mapsupp - as is the case with my 450, this limits her to two bascamp map file downloads... one on the Oregon's internal memory and one on the micro SD card.
  • Just a thought, but are you running the latest software? IIRC the ability to rename maps wasn't available on the Oregon initially, but a software update allowed maps to be anythingyoulike.img :)

Boy you've got a long memory, sussamb. If that's the op's problem, he's running some of the original or almost original firmware.

My Oregon 400t didn't recognize multiple file names until maybe a year after I got it. But the 200, 300 and 400t were the original Oregon models. The 450 is much newer and uses different firmware. It has always been able to use multiple filenames (as we have learned elsewhere, this is known as an n-map device).

So again, if you really want to resolve this problem you need to contact Garmin support. Maybe it's a bug in the latest Oregon x50 firmware? IIRC, you can contact the developers at [email protected]

thanks for all the input. I am running 5.57 Beta, which I think is the latest, on my 450.

My Oregon does recognize other map file names (i.e. Ibycus Topo 3.2, MAPSUPP Eng Topo, mapsupp Eng) that have been loaded directly into the Oregon - the name recognition problem that I am experiencing relates only to the map files downloaded via BaseCamp. A mentioned, this problem also arises on a second, much newer, Oregon 450 that I have access to.

First turn on visibility of extension in Windows. I'm sure you can figure this out by using Google...

Second, post a screenshot of the file folder with the maps in it.

Interestingly, the latest version of Basecamp will download the maps but only in their entirety - the customized map install feature doesn't seem to work at all. I can select portions of the map with a right click (their outlines become yellow) but as soon as I release the right click the yellow switches back to black.

You select map tiles with the left mouse button. The right mouse button deselects in MapInstall 4.0. There is a ? button on the Customize page that explains how to select and deselects map tiles.

Selected maps are displayed in blue with a thick, black border in MapInstall 4.0.
