Compatible Waypoint Symbols

Hi.

Base Camp displays more symbols than what is compatible with my Garmin Vista HCx.

Is there a way to filter out (remove) those symbols that aren't in my GPS? I hate selecting a symbol only to find that the GPS doesn't support it.

Thanks.
  • I agree with the suggestion that it would be nice if icons that are in Basecamp could be installed on a device that does not have them. But that, first, requires the feature be added to the device before the Basecamp developers would be able to take advantage of it.

Not much point in Basecamp being able to do something that none of the devices know how to do.

    ...ken...

So, until that "feature" is available on the device, perhaps as PLARKINJR suggested, the custom symbol route is the way to go. If there were a way to take a BC symbol and get it to the device as a custom symbol that would be a good first step.

I'm assuming there is not way to "extract" a symbol from BC -- even if I was willing to install the result manually as I now do with symbols I create myself in Photoshop.

Yes, there are two possible workarounds I can think of:
    1. add functionality to basecamp to manage custom-symbols on devices more easily than the normal way (which I don't even understand on my eTrex. I know it is possible.) Perhaps if it is nothing more than allowing a symbol already present in BC to be "exported" to be installed as custom on both sides (BC and device)

    2. providing a "mapping" functionality in basecamp where you can say either:
    a) When device X is connected, only show these symbols in basecamp
    ...or...
    b) When I use symbol "FOO" in basecamp, convert it to symbol "BLAH" when transferring to device X, and "YADA" when transfering to device Y.

Basecamp devs would not need to actually MAKE these mappings for every device. They would provide the toolset and the users of the software would create the mappings between the software and their devices. I'd do it for my eTrex, and potentially offer it here to others. And If you don't have an eTrex, you would not need it, nor would I need such a mapping for a Nuvi, since I don't have one.
