BaseCamp

I upgraded my Garmin maps today and also in the process received the complimentary *(&^%%^#$ BaseCamp.

Please give me back MapSource. Tried to search for an address in BaseCamp and no matter what, it can be found even if the map is zoomed in and centred on the address. Did the same search on MapSource and worked like a charm.

How can a reputable company create such poor software!

For further examples of this mindset, I’ll respond specifically to your list of “acomplishements”

You are very quick to dismiss many of these because they don't affect your personally. But of course, this is all about you.

Many others do in fact appreciate and use these features. What makes you think it's not "what the majority of users are looking for"? Since they receive feedback from many of their customers, I'd think Garmin would be in a better position to evaluate what "the majority" wants.

Granted, Basecamp has its bugs and limits, but FALAGAR and the other developers have shown their commitment to customers by the time they spend listening and responding in these forums, and by the changes in Basecamp that are a direct result of this interaction.

Have you ever read the BaseCamp threads from other forums? For example, zumoForums.com? I think there's about a 3% adoption rate. How about CVOHarley.com? HarleyTechTalk.org? Or do you only follow what the corporate line is? You're quick to think that because it works for swimmers or hikers that it is better that what they quit developing.

I agree FALAGAR has been helpful to those who accept this application for their use. That is to be commended, no doubt. What disappoints me is that, as explained before, this application is not helpful to those of use who want it to perform better than Mapsource. I do not wish for an iMaps program, and that's what they keep telling me to use.

I am still disappointed and, other than some stories of folks who are allowed to post here, I have read very few sucess stories from folks who use these apllications in a similar manner.

I really hate jerks like this. Free software, with very helpful developers responding to the user's needs, just bitchin and complaining, because they are too effin lazy to learn the product.

When Basecamp first came out, I had a difficult time converting from MpaSource, but realizing MapSource will be obsolete, I took the time to **learn the product**. Rather than whining about its not the same, blah blah. I spent a little effort and intelligence to try and understand how the developers envisoned the product.

And you know what? I now find basecamp WAY more useful than MapSource.

So rather than whining and snivelling, why dont you take the time to learn the product and be grateful for what is supplied to you for free! If you are still disapointed go and purchase something, and save your crying for those forums.

    Sheesh, some people's kids.
  • I have worked with computers before there were PC's. The program applications that were created by the programers have had a common thread in their use. You make a file and save it. You give it a name that means something to you. Word, Excel, WordPerfect, Lotus. Even business software like AutoCAD to do design work. All these saves a specific project in a specific file with a specific name and you can put it in seperate locations.

BaseCamp works like a server database one file you put everything in and you can't modify the name or location. This is normally foreign to everyday users. It is difficult for someone to be using a standard then change to something that is foreign in their concept.

Personally I am trying to learn BaseCamp but I can't do the things I am use to in MapSource. I travel fulltime in an RV and keep a lot of my routes and waypoints. I have a file with about 200 or more campgrounds. When I want to go from one point to another I can locate the waypoints, copy them into a new MapSource file make my route and adjust it to meet where I want to go. I try to stay off Interstates so I have to shape almost every route. This makes alot of common waypoints which are seperate in each file but gets confusing when all of them are in the same database.

I really depend on my 465t every day because we travel a lot. There are thousands of people that RV such as we do and they have the same understanding of a stand alone file method. They are not in intrested in learning a new foreign method of using file applications. What this will eventually do is cause those people to purchase a GPS that has applications that work the way they have been trained to operate over many years and will still be in the future.

Again I am going to keep trying to use BC to map my routes but in the long run if it will not help me we will be looking at what the others have to offer.

It is very intresting for a company to dictate to their customers that if you don't like what we are doing, go somewhere else. I have always found it is more profitable to cater to customers preferences.

It's not FREE! It's part of the $2000 worth of navigational products I've PAID for. Let's see how you feel when Apple takes your OS and changes it to MS, or vice-versa.

I have a point, and it's being demonstrated. Garmin will disregard this because it's easier to put their head in the sand than to provide a quality application.

There are a LOT of folks who can't stand this app. I just got tired of preaching to the choir on the other sites listed above. That's why I'm here, and waiting for an answer.

    Jerk? Only on occasion.
