Categories and Nuvi 3490LMT

I've created a category on my GPS and started to put my favorites on one by one but with over 400 of them it will take a long time. I went searching thru BaseCamp looking for the options like Mapsource had with selecting categories for my waypoints. There seems to have no options for editing the categories and or sending/receiving them from the gps. Or am I missing an option somewhere that is hidden? if not is there an easier way to edit and create new categories for existing waypoints?:confused::confused:

I spend hours back and for between computer, BaseCamp, Mapsource and 2 GPSers to try an dfigure this out. If anyone can help I'd appreciate it.

Currently BaseCamp does not support waypoint categories.

We are aware that this is a feature many users would like to see in BaseCamp. We are working on it.

Well that will explain everything... Ok One next question.

I've noticed that when I transferred all my waypoints from my 765T to my 3490LMT all the icons have changed to the Heart Icon, and back to the Blue Flag when working BaseCamp. Will new releases support the new Icons that are on the 3490LMT and be able to ad custom Icons also like in the 765T?

    Thanks

This issue in general (ways to map different/unsupported icon sets between units and BC) has been around a long time, and I don't believe Garmin is committing any resources to it. I'm very interested in this thread now.

We are aware of the icon issue. We'd like to fix it in the future.

It's a bigger task than it might seem, involving quite a few different teams, and a lot of devices.

That sort of thing would be a lot easier to fix and could be avoided in most cases if Garmin's development groups would create some cross-product standards. This sort of dog's breakfast of features and functions that each independent dev group does to amuse or differentiate themselves serves no useful purpose. It simply creates incompatibilities. The longer a customer stays with Garmin the more likely they will encounter this silliness.

And long term customers are the most valuable. It costs a lot to get a new customer. It should cost very little to satisfy a return customer. Just get the basics right so it's easy to transition from one product to another. But that would take a strategy that transcends dev group independence and enough concern about customer satisfaction to cause such a strategy to be created.

Cannot Use Basecamp to Categorize Waypoints on 3490LMT

I transferred many waypoints over from my old Nuvi to my new 3490lmt. My old Nuvi used Mapsource where I was able to edit and change categories, but the 3490lmt does not. I downloaded Basecamp, and it worked perfectly, but discovered that you cannot edit waypoints or change categories. Is there a way to quickly categorize all the waypoints that were transferred to my new device?

I'm confused. You have described two different problems. One has a possible solution. The other does not.

    A. If your 3490 does not support categories, there's not much you can do.

    B. If your 3490 supports categories you can load them into Mapsource and edit them, save them as either a GPX or GDB file and open the file in Basecamp. Then transfer the waypoints to your device from Basecamp without messing with them. I think Basecamp will leave the Category data in the waypoints and transfer it even though it won't let you edit it. So it should show up in the 3490 if it supports Categories.

If the 3490 does not support categories, you're not dead yet. You can still use symbols (icons) to do a very crude sort of categorization. This has its problems because you have to select symbols that exist on both the 3490 and Basecamp or they all show up as the default waypoint symbol on the 3490.

If the 3490 does not support categories, and you think symbols would be useful but you're not sure what to do about it, just ask and someone in here can help you with that.

    Waypoints

I hate to see these hearts instead of the real Icons I have assigned. It is nice when navigating to see in the map the waypoints with its respective icons and names instead of these green hearts with no names.

    Please Garmin fix this problem.

Besides, It is not nice to see the restaurants, gas stations, etc from the map plus saved points, It is better to see waypoints only.

    Regards
    Oscar
  • Not sure if you're using Basecamp or Mapsource? Basecamp certainly retains the icons I've used when I send them to my 1490 :)

DITTO - Please fix the problem. I have three Garmin units and would hate to go to another company just because Garmin will not fix problems like this (especially with a new product).
