A beta version of BaseCamp 3.2 is available (link below). Please read the following:

Warning

This is beta software, or an early peak at an incomplete product. We value your input, so we are providing this to you so that you can send us your comments and ideas. We have tested this beta version extensively, but that doesn't mean that there won't be bugs. Use at your own risk.

Notes

  • Please backup your existing data from BC 3.1 before running the beta.
  • The beta build requires you to allow Garmin to collect statistics on how you use BaseCamp to help us improve the application. This will be optional for the release of BaseCamp 3.2, but it is a required condition for using the beta.

Changes

Changes listed below are above and beyond the previous beta

  • Improved routing
  • BirdsEye downloads should now work
  • Added dragging photos onto the map views
  • Added dragging files into My Collection and the user data list
  • Added activity profile selection dialog at startup, improved migration of existing route settings and routes
  • Added better preserving app state when restarting (selected tool, selected folder, selected view modes, etc)
  • Added support for restoring backups from different computers
  • Changed drawing style of routes and tracks to use thinner lines
  • Fixed issue with adding and removing links on various property tabs
  • Various improvements to the draw order slider for imagery
  • Improved find address near center of screen
  • Removed filtered routes
  • Removed the "Route style" group box from the route options since it doesn't make sense to have multiple "Direct" route profiles.

Track tool operation, datavue pane, track point visibility

    1. Track tool operation: joining tracks is just different enough to be a little confusing at first for those of us who are used to that other Garmin mapping program :) but I think it will be just a matter of getting used to it. Would like to see either a dedicated hot-key to get me there or the ability to assign my own hot key combo or mouse button to get me there.

    2. When I delete a track the data view pane resets to the top which is annoying! I would like it to stay exactly where I had positioned it before I deleted the named track. Don't really care if it goes to the name above or the name below just keep me in the general vicinity.

    3. I really like the data view pane/map switch tab: an elegant solution!

    4. Track point size is a bit too small for my old eyes/crappy monitor. I'm torn on this because I really appreciate the relative track-point vs road depiction sizing since it makes it so easy to accurately place the track points. New glasses or an LCD display might cure this niggle for me.

    2. I am confused as to what you mean. We do remember the view (data or map view) and also the sorting (in data view). Could you eleborate?

I'm using 3.2.0.2. My Sort To is always defaulted to Name Ascending. I change it to Symbol and Descending, which places the Track at the top. ( I previous posted I wanted Track at the bottom, which was wrong). I change the Sort To, close BC leaving the computer on, reopen BC and the sort order is back to Default, the file is remembered. So the Sort order is not saved on this Windows 7 laptop, nor is it saved on my XP SP3. All installs of BC are default--nothing special.

    Thanks for listening--kudos to you.

So we do not remember the sort order while in map view. Thanks for finding and reporting this issue!

That shouldn't be too hard to correct. I'll create a case and hopefully we'll have that fixed for the final 3.2 release.

    1. We'll see if making a hot-key is feasible.
    2. We'll look into that.
    4. We'll look into that one as well. This might be one of those things that some people like, and others dislike. So not sure what we'll end up doing.

    Thanks again for your feedback.

    Thanks everyone for your feedback!

We do read and create create cases for pretty much everything we get reported.

    1. Where do you set the default route color? There is no such setting in BaseCamp.

    3. Do you have examples for Garmin maps where routing is worse than in MS 6.16.3?

4b. Custom route profiles would be cool. We want to do it, it just didn't make this release.

    7. We will probably add more and/or different stats. So any feedback on what would be useful is very welcome.

    1. Well no clue anymore. But I have one color that is named "default". I think I set this up either in Mapsource or Basecamp some time ago, maybe in a beta version? See screenshot, I do have a default color setup somewhere but sadly it is not used. I hate always changing from magenta to my default color after the route is created (and I did not set this up via registry hacking):

    3. Well for my own maps, but also for maps like Garmin Topo Switzerland v2.

    7. Well definitely add accumulated ascent and accumulated descent. This besides total distance (and accumulated distance on the route view) is an absolute essential. Some incline figures for longer uphill/downhill stretches (best by moving the reference points) would be nice too.

There are no plans to port this feature. While one could argue that the MapSource track join tool is more powerful, it's also hard to discover and maybe a bit more advanced than we like.
I think the track join tool in BaseCamp works pretty intuitively without requiring mouse acrobatics.
I feel very unhappy with this answer!
It's not clear for me, why the simple very intuitive MapSource method (clicking mouse in first or second part of next track) is too advanced for BaseCamp.

I am the producer of the GPS networks for cyclists in the Netherlands, made with Garmin's MapSource. The total amount of tracks for the Netherlands in one file amounts to over 11.600 tracks.
The 'Adding together track button' in the tracktool in MapSource is used to produce a build track via the network.

    See: http://members.home.nl/jkelder/Fietsroutenetwerk_Nederland.rar

It's a big file and only can be saved and loaded in .gdb/.mps format.
Also the MapSource version 6.15.7 or older is recommanded in view of the thinner tracklines.

Making some exercises with it in MapSource and BaseCamp will exactly show, what I mean and hopefully you will reconsider your earlier answer!
Wishing you much success with BaseCamp, specially with scoring on this point. :)

I see what you mean about the 'default' route color. I'll have to investigate why there is a color with that name. Because I don't think we allow to change this anywhere.

Do you have a gdb or gpx file with a route from Topo Switzerland v2 that illustrates bad routing?

There is such a color, because sometime ago one could set a default color via GUI. Basecamp 6.16.3 shows exactly the same behavior and also offers me a grey default color which however is not used by default.

Sorry bout Garmin Topo Ch v2, I calculated routes against Mapsource 6.13.6 which gave more sensible routes.

I have attached a sample route of Mapsource 6.16.3 vs Basecamp 3.2.0.2 where Basecamp goes completly stupid however -- this is using my Austria map: ftp://ftp5.gwdg.de/pub/misc/openstreetmap/openmtbmap/mtbaustria.exe

GDB files are attached. Routing is set to bicycle, shorter distance, slider middle, no avoidances activated. Mapsource 153km, 8 hours, 04 minutes, Basecamp does an extra loop plus worse routing on the rest, 251km and 13 hours.
Also I must say to analyse the routing, the Mapsource properties tab is still far far superior.

Hopefully I'm just missing something---But how can i remove the Cadence graph from the Elevation Profile? I would want to do the same with my Heartrate monitor when I wear it. I just want to display the elevation, in the Elevation Profile.

I also mentioned previously--Please save Cadence & Heart Rate data when Exporting, or Send To. Currently it is stripped from the data when saving the file. It is not stripped when Sending to My Collection. IMHO, it is more important to save it than to display it. Training Center or Garmin Connect can display it.

    Ron

Edit--Even if i just open the Track (with no changes) on my O450 in BaseCamp, BaseCamp must rewrite the file for some reason, because the Date Modified is changed and more importantly--the Cadence is deleted. Bummer!

Something for the wish-list: is it possible to put the current location in the center of the screen and the map centered around this point?

I do not mean a live tracking system, but just a button for 'where am I?'
