live gps?

pardon my ignorance, but is it possible to read live gps data into basecamp? this would be fairly handy.

what i actually want to do is have the garmin gpsmap62s pot direcltly into Mapinfo GIS but i would need to spend abut $3000 to update to the most recent edition which runs an add-in that will now read garmin usb protocol..man they really know how to screw ya dont they!

anyway, i thought there might be a way around this using basecamp

I would be very interested as well to see realtime GPS data in Basecamp.
All the other programs mentioned earlier don't offer the functions Basecamp does. Birdseye for example.
It should be relatively easy to add that function.
If Garmin doesn't want to do it for free, do it in a Basecamp Pro version.
I would certainly pay for this feature as a pro version or add on (plugin?). Love to see it in the Macintosh .app

Between Great vector maps, BirdsEye, Garmin Custom Maps etc. I think Garmin would have a moneymaker here.

If I'm not mistaken, Mobil PC is more for street maps.

I, too, would like to see live gpsr support. Right now, I do it with my own maps in Global Mapper. But that's not much use with Garmin copyright maps.

This would be a nice feature, if properly implemented. However, I wonder if BaseCamp can really be all things to all people? For laptop navigation, it seems that a more stripped-down program would be more appropriate. To be useful on the road, a program needs a simpler user interface with big buttons and displays.

These are good points but Garmin already has plenty on the road GPS units with big `ol buttons, 'off the road' is more what I'm interested with my Garmin DEM TOPOs, BirdsEye or Custom Garmin Maps with my Garmin GPS unit. There is no software product that will fill that bill, not Global Mapper, Fugawi or OziExplorer, and certainly not nRoute or Mobile PC.

    Nice feature

It would certainly be nice to have the larger screen from the laptop when moving; I'd be interested in that.

One solution might be to change over to the Delorme stuff. AFAIK their mapping programs accept live GPS input (at least from their units) and they, too, have "all you can eat" downloadable imagery.

I've used their stuff before and wouldn't recommend it. Have you seen their international maps? Useless. Do they even make a GPS unit or do they sub them out to another company? No thanks. I already have several programs that will provide live GPS tracking that is more versatile than anything DeLorme offers but adding this to BaseCamp would turn a fine software into a great one.

Which programs do you recommend for live GPS tracking?

If you are interested in a variety of options for realtime navigation on a laptop or netbook, go have a look at the Laptop GPS World discussion forum.

Is there any chance this could be added? The other options don't really work.
