BirdsEye - download size limited to only about 76 MB

Considering the attitude to people like you, it's a wonder that they participate in these forums at all. :rolleyes: If you have issues with Garmin, send them an e-mail. The developers have been really helpful to many people on these forums and I'm sure that this issue is something completely beyond their control.

Well, I'm frustrated that I'm paying full price for a beta quality server environment and then on top of that having to use beta quality client software.

I was being sarcastic about getting a refund, hence the rolled-eye smiley.

All that throttling down the max tiles per download seems to have accomplished is pissing off the paid users who are actually using the service. Really doesn't make me want to renew, good thing it is an annual subscription and not monthly!

This downloading is inhumane slow, I feel I’m in a time warp. I got a 20Mbit line, but I feels like I got my old 14kbs modem hooked up again. We going to download the images anyway so why all the restrictions and the throttle on idle? If the product not finished you should not advertise it and clearly state that it’s in Alfa or Beta. When I signed up I not noticed any warnings (we are man and don’t read to good).

I can understand that it’s still under development, and there maybe loads of things still to do, but its pretty ridicule to have your computer on for day’s or weeks to download some pictures

Just to be clear - I would prefer a large download area myself, just like you guys. But I have to say... I am seeing noticeably faster downloads today myself. This is the 4th download with the new limits and the tiles are counting up much faster than they did before with the 20,000 tile limit. Also, there is a much shorter delay between clicking the download button and getting the finish button and properties at the bottom of the screen.

In the minute or two (max) that it's taken me to write this, I have just downloaded 220 tiles. That is *much* faster than what I used to see. Maybe the fact that non-subscribers are limited is helping?

Yes, it's more of a nuisance to download a bunch of little areas, but it sounds like this is just a temporary limit. In the time since I mentioned the 220 tiles, the total has grown to 350 now - and I type pretty fast. :)

This is definitely a speed improvement.

Just to follow up... I am seeing MUCH faster downloads of BirdsEye imagery today. Just now finished downloading 4983 tiles and it took 56 minutes. I never really timed my downloads of 19,000 tiles but they were certainly taking 6 hours or more. And they pretty much always stalled out at least once, so it could take far longer to complete the download.

I would certainly like to download larger areas, but this speed increase is a big improvement.

How can Garmin limit the dowloads? In their product description is standing:

"Transfer an unlimited number of satellite and aerial images to your device with this subscription and free software BaseCamp. "

..... so, is this true or not. Would be nice to get a statment from Garmin to this issue. Currently I dont have a subscription, but I am thinking about this.

That statement is still completely true. You can transfer an unlimited amount of imagery to your device; that has not changed. The only change is that individual files that you download from Garmin's servers are limited to ~5,000 map tiles. There is no limit to how many of these files you can download. Garmin never made any promises about the download file size.

yes OSTROFF01, actually "Garmin never made any promises about the download file size", but suddenly cut the download file size to 25% without even warn customers. This is a decent attitude for a finished product, or we are paying for a eternal beta status product? this is the big issue.

I guess I am missing something here. See azdrm's post on the previous page - the limit is temporary. Even if it's not, I don't think the developers have anything to do with it.

It is our understanding that the limit for subscribers will be increased once we have a better handle on the server loading issues.

Yes, obviously BirdsEye and BaseCamp are "work in progress". If you bothered to do even the slightest amount of research (like reading posts here), you would have known that before you purchased. Would I like it to be better? Of course I would.

OTOH, I now have 14GB of BirdsEye loaded on my Oregon and it works great. For $30, I think I've already gotten my money's worth. When has Garmin ever sold 14GB of map data for $30? US Topo is about 3GB and lists for $100.

They are working to improve things - just look at how the developers respond to questions and problems in these forums. And I am seeing faster downloads in the last couple days. Maybe that's because the whiners are standing in the corner, crying and stomping their feet about the limits instead of downloading?

Unlimited means no limit. How can then there be a limit on some individual files?

About the download file size. "Garmin never made any promises about the download file size." ..... A file size is AS IS. Garmin cannot say, oh, this file is too big, you can only download the half file ....

Please, dont compare raster with vector graphics. They are different kinds of boots; you disqualify yourself.

Anyway it is appreciated that Garmin gives better details about their products.
