Garmin crashes each time I plug in USB to transfer routes.

Hi, I am trying to load routes on Basecamp to my Garmin Etrex 30x, when I plug in my USB to the laptop, a message appears; " saving all waypoints routes and trip log in GPX format 100% complete" Then nothing happens; so I try to switch it off and get a beeping sound, or a continuous beep.  sometimes it crashes and I have to take out the battery. What on earth is going on here? I'm far from impressed with this unit to be honest. Had nothing but problems from day one but I'm stuck with it so advice appreciated!

  • Were these routes plotted in BaseCamp or have you downloaded them from a website or been sent GPX files?

How did you upload your routes to the Garmin - using BaseCamp or using File Manager? If you use BaseCamp, it automatically puts the GPX file in the correct folder and will creates a new folder on the mSD card if necessary.

When you send waypoints, routes or tracks to either the internal memory of your device or to an inserted mSD card, your device will read them. Your device reads the GPX file to see what it contains and shows the waypoints, routes and tracks in the appropriate page in your device menu. So it doesn't matter whether you sent it to the device or mSD card. Have you looked at the \GPX sub-folders of your device and the card - are the files there?

Are you actually transferring routes or tracks (there is difference as to where the device shows them)? Have you looked in the Tracks page of your device rather than the Routes page? You previously mentioned a GPX file named _mm158b.gpx. Presumably this was not created by you. If this is one of the routes you can't see, can you post a copy for us to look at to see if it is readable?

If you still can't see them, ensure the routes are first imported into BaseCamp into a List. BC will place an icon beside each import to tell you if it is a route (three linked green squares) or a track (two footprints) and list any waypoints (selected waypoint icon displayed) it finds.

Then send just the routes to the mSD card using BaseCamp and check that they have appeared in the G:\User Data folder in BaseCamp. Then repeat with the tracks. Then repeat with the waypoints. If they have been shown, then disconnect your device, power it up and you should see them in the Routes, Tracks and or Waypoints pages. NB the mSD card you are using must be formatted in FAT32 otherwise neither the device nor BaseCamp can read it.

  • Hi, firstly thank you for taking the trouble to reply. This looks like a very helpful forum, despite my basic questions!  I will work through your suggestions tomorrow when I am back from work and let you know but quickly reading it I think this will help me sort it. Very much appreciated!

  • Okay, so I am starting from scratch and I followed the advice given so far, checking for FAT32 etc and I deleted everything  from Basecamp to have a clean sheet. This is the story so far;

I wish to follow routes from a walking book Walk Mallorca. So; I downloaded the 2 digital maps to my GPS. I then downloaded the GPX files and waypoints to the unit also.

Both digital maps of Mallorca are now on my memory card E under user data . (Mallnntt16east and west) Unfortunately these don’t seem to work, no clue why but I take a paper map so it’s not the end of the world. Happy to send a screenshot but how?

Unlisted data contains the waypoints for the routes, these seem to have been superimposed on the default garmin Europe map So far so good.

I now realise the stuff I downloaded wasn’t a collection of routes, it was just waypoints. I need to construct routes joining them up on Basecamp and then send to the GPS  which I think I can do.

So I’ve made progress with help from this group and the guy who runs Walk Mallorca a very nice gentleman.

I would ideally like a better “background” map to superimpose the waypoints and routes as the Garmin default map of Europe is poor in terms of detail. I wonder if there are any out there. Don’t see this working with the Mallnntt digital ones I downloaded.

That’s where I am, better than before, and any ideas welcome, thanx again for those who took the trouble to reply, very nice of you.

  • Okay, I had the same book and I do have the same DWG Tour & Trail mapping and the GPX files of waypoints from 2014. These two maps have been prepared as Garmin Custom Maps in the .KMZ format and will load into both BaseCamp and your device. (They will also open in Google Earth.)

I suspect you have wrongly placed the files on the card. Your card does not use a folder called User Data - that is just what it is called in BaseCamp!  All Garmin map types have to be placed in the correct folders on the mSD card. If you are going to copy them to your device using windows, custom maps such as these two must be copied into a card folder named [SD:]\Garmin\CustomMaps. Waypoints, tracks and routes in GPX files need to be copied into a card folder named [SD:]\Garmin\GPX

I presume you will want to see the maps In BaseCamp too, so create a List Folder called Mallorca, click on it and create a List called DWG. Select this List, then use File > Import and browse to the two KMZ files and import them. Then use File > Import to import one of the GPX files. The first one I have is 01 Calvia - Mirador de n'Alzamora.gpx and this contains 7 waypoints only. If you click on a waypoint you should see it appear over the DWG mapping.

Select both maps and then right click > Send To and choose the card to send the map to the card. Send one or more waypoints to the device or the card in the same way. Use Device > Eject to disconnect your device and card (or just close BC and use Windows Device Eject facility).

Power up your device and go to the Map page and Map Setup to check that both the DWG maps are shown in the map menu and are enabled. Go to the Waypoints page or use Find to choose a waypoint which should be displayed over the appropriate section of mapping.

My experience with the raster DWG maps in other areas is that they work fine for navigating on the device, but are limited when you zoom right in compared to a vector map, and don't have all the POIs available.

I would suggest you download the Freizeitkarte vector OSM map of Spain https://www.freizeitkarte-osm.de/garmin/en/more-countries.html. You want to download the Garmin GPS-device: (0.8 GB) Spain - Install image for micro SD card version for the IMG map to copy to the [SD:]\Garmin folder. You want the Microsoft Windows: (0.8 GB) Spain - GMAP Install Archive (full) for Garmin BaseCamp to install the map in BaseCamp. This map is routable and you may then be able to use the DWG waypoint sets to create a route of each walk, which will be quicker than plotting it manually. If you don't like the colours, then there are others.

I'd also recommend you buy the Cicerone "Mountain Walking in Mallorca" by Paddy Dillon https://www.cicerone.co.uk/mountain-walking-in-mallorca which comes with a full set of 50 GPX tracks for you to download, as it will save you having to plotting them! (Tip - import them one at a time to check the track naming and numbering compared to the book).

  • Hi, thanks for this very detailed answer, it all starts to fit together. I'll once again work through it all, its a steep learning curve and after I will let you know how it goes, I'm now hopeful this will get sorted and I don't get lost in the Mountains! Thanks, hope I dont need any more help!! again!

  • Hi

Okay I've tried my best to work through your very comprehensive advice. ( Very much appreciate this)

Still having problems but I think as I work through this all I am learning a lot more about this GPS setup.

Quick question; how do I upload screenshots? I tried " insert"  but it doesnt allow me to choose a file on my PC, just a link?

I reckon a screenshot would reveal where I am going wrong. For example I can see all I need on the SD card, but cannot retrieve these maps on the unit, I enabled the Mallorca maps but I'm damned if I can find them, it just seems to default to the one provided by Garmin which lacks detail

As I say a screenshot would show  where I am going wrong I reckon. But how do to do one? Off to Mallorca tomorrow so I am struggling!!

  • You can upload an image into an image hosting site like ImgBB and paste the link e.g. https://ibb.co/hW8mXRX or do the same from your cloud storage,

  • Got the image - can you also screen shot the folder structure of the card in Win File Explorer?

  • Also can you screen shot BC again, but with the EOS_Digital [G:] User Data folder highlighted in the Device panel

This is what you are aiming to see (don't worry about the mapfile names which I changed):
