Route or Track? Is there a difference?

HI everyone. This may be a dumb question......I'm fairly new to using my Etrex 20 which I bought after my wife told me I needed an alert signal to stop me wandering off course......She's only being kind after I did get a little lost in the Lake District last year......

Anyway, I wondered if there was a difference between a "Route" and a "Track"? I ask only because, fir the first time, I've plotted a simple walk in ViewRanger (now OutdoorActive) and it allows me to creat a GPX file which I've done. I've sent that to the Etrex 20, and it has appeared in "Tracks" whereas all other GPX files I've downloaded (all created by other people, thank you!) have gone into the "Route" folder.

I just wondered if there was a difference between the two and, if so, a) what are the differences and b) is one better than the other?

With our routeCourse app there is no need to pipe your Plotaroute route through Ride with GPS. Just export from Plotaroute as TCX and import into dynamicWatch, ready to download wirelessly using routeCourse. See

Conversely, you can create the route with a cuesheet (coursepoints) at Ride with GPS (I think someone else says you need a paid account there to do that) without using Plotaroute. dynamicWatch can then bring that in automatically from Ride with GPS, no export/import needed. See

You only need a paid account on RWGPS to add custom course points on RWGPS.

RWGPS always adds the ones it calculates for turns (for every account).

If your course is on RWGPS, you don't need to use any other website.

Just pin the course on RWGPS and use the RWGPS app (on Edge units) or the GRouteLoader app/widget on most Garmin devices (that support IQ).

But I can not provide a plotaroute to dynamicwatch, can i?

All of this is for use with a IOS phone with no usb connection at any time.

Do you know how to send regular waypoints in that way other than Garmin Explore?

You cannot bring in a route from Plotaroute in the same direct/automatic way that you can from Ride with GPS, Strava, etc, but you can import a TCX from it:

- Export TCX from Plotaroute's app or web page. I do not use Plotaroute myself so do not if this step is easy or possible on a phone, but it should be. Save the TCX file to (local) Files or a linked cloud account (eg iCloud)

- Import TCX into dynamicWatch's Import page
