Routes or Tracks or ..... ?

Hi Guys,

newbie here (wasn't but had to make a new account ;))

Question please, but first please let me explain

I am planning a 2 Month Camper Trip in Europe that we would like to do Summer of next year.
So I am making 2 routes for every day (1 intended route and 1 alternative) with a couple but not a lot of Waypoints (10-15 max) in BaseCamp.
Device I will be using is a Garmin Nuvi 770LMT-D

Now my intention is to follow the route as much as possible but I would also sometimes like to deviate from the route a bit and then go back to the original trip.

What do you guys recommend I send to my device to accomplish this. Routes or Tracks or ..... ??

Thx Guys for any pointers / Tricks / tips

Really appreciated

Mike
  • Although Brexit may not go ahead as planned :)

There are those who wish Brexit wasn't going ahead at all  but that is going off route!
  • And 57 days and then both UK and EU that is a bit too short, I am now already struggling for time to visit everything we want to see ;)

My grandson, who lives in Chicago thought he could "do" the UK and Europe in a three week vacation in 2017. Of course his tightly crafted plans quickly fell apart but he still managed to see some of his top 100 places to visit and thoroughly enjoyed himself.

For some OSM maps have a look at talkytoaster.me.uk who has got a European section of maps which can be downloaded for free or at low cost on a per-country basis and load directly into BaseCamp or onto an SD card/memory stick.

    Agreed on both counts :)

Better OSM maps exist. All should be free although talkytoaster sells his claiming he's done extra work on them. Others who have done so make no charge so just look around.

    Thanks Guys.

That talkytoaster is asking GBP 11 per map. An I need (NL,DEU,AT,CH,IT,FR,LUX,BE) that makes it as expensive as the Complete Garmin Map (EUR 99). But I guess it's more up to date.

I will try to find other maps, but if it fails I just buy the Garmin Map (2019.*) I have already send an email to the Garmin Office in Taiwan

Re: 57 Days. Most of our time we will be in the mountainous regions of Europe as my Wife loves the Mountains, but I already had to skip a couple of destinations (like Stelvio pass) because when looking at the videos on YouTube of People driving those Passes she said. "NO WAY" Simplon we will take the train, but the Grossglockner Alpen Strasse there is no way around it (except not taking it)

Thx again Guys, really appreciated !!

talkytoaster used to do his maps for free until he discovered that they were being cloned and sold on fleabay by unscrupulous types. I've used his maps for many years and found them to be useful. However no mapping system is 100% perfect, they can never be completely up-to-date and there are always anomalies especially with POI's. Even the latest City Navigator continually want to send me down a minor, narrow back lane in a small village near to me even though the lane was by-passed in 1880 by a newer road! The narrow back lane is neither the fastest or shortest option either, it's just totally illogical.

You might be able to pick up a more recent (than your current European maps) Garmin City Navigator on microSD. Although you can't load the maps directly into BaseCamp you can put the card into a USB SD reader (as mentioned by others) and BC will recognise the maps and will enable you to shape routes using it. My 2008 City Nav from a Garmin handheld is still recognised and works OK in BC.

When you eventually get to the point of transferring routes to you weapon of choice (770?) remember to check the BC settings under Edit -> Options -> Device Transfer for the device in question as the setting here will have a bearing on the way the route is handled by the receiving device.

Finally don't dismiss the fantastic Stelvio Pass (or any other passes for that matter) on the basis of what you see on YouTube otherwise you will both be missing out on the experience of a lifetime. There are always "dramatic" videos on YouTube, especially those created by bikers!

Try here for free mapping http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl

Thx, I already downloaded those OSM maps, but also found a bug with them and also cross country routing doesn’t seem to work

thx jamaubrit again appreciated that you take your time to write really valuable info.

    thx
  • Which area? Never had an issue. You can edit osm mapping errors yourself via the website. Note though OSM routing can be hit and miss although to be fair you'll find errors in Garmin mapping too.

You could also try here http://freizeitkarte-osm.de/garmin/en/index.html

    SUSSAMB

1 Bug is that long distance routing (with only 2 points) results in a Direct Line and when adding more points it sends you on a detour of a couple 100kms. Solution to that is add again more Points. (This was with the DEU (routable) map)

It's not a biggie I am using OSM maps because my Garmin map isn't that detailed. Do you have the latest Garmin Map ?? If so could you check something for me ?

This Waypoint: N46.06588° E7.77492° (Point is in CH)

On my Garmin Map there isn't a road from the Main road to that Point but with OSM there is, I just want to know if the current Garmin Map shows that road.

    Thx
