Creating Custom Map

I currently have a Legend Cx, but I am looking really hard at the GPSMAP 64st. Will probably purchase in the next week or so. I mainly use my Garmin for hunting/hiking. I do alot of hunting on public land and in order to not cross over onto private land, I use my handheld along with .gpx files.

The problem that I have with ,gpx files is that they import into BaseCamp as tracks. (I get the same results wihen I import into MapSource). What I would like to do is convert these tracks into "Boundary Lines". Many times for a given wildlife management area (WMA), there will be small pockets inside the WMA that are private lands. Is there a way to make this new map have one name and when it is loaded/shown it will show the outer boundary and all the smaller pockets inside as well?

Attached is the .gpx file when I look at it with a .gpx viewer. Notice how the section is broken up into small pieces.

Thanks.

  • You can also use gmaptool program to combine maps.

    http://www.gmaptool.eu/en/content/gmaptool

1- Drag and drop the two map files into the "File name" list in the "Files" tab.

2- Click on the Join tab.

3- Pick an output file or just type the name and path in the box next to the "Output file" button. This is the name of the new map file. Make sure it has a *.img extension.

    4- Enter a "mapset" name.

    5- Click on "Join all".

One problem with this is that the style (what they look like) of the border lines may be controlled by the other map.

  • When you use imgfromgpx, check the "Include create gmapsupp.img".

Also, indicate a useful name for the "Name on computer" and "Name on device" (you can use the same name).

The "gmapsupp.img" is your map file. You can rename this to something useful (you want to rename it!).

You should be able to just copy the renamed file to the "\Garmin" folder on your device.

Keep in mind that some devices don't support multiple maps.

The map should show up. If it doesn't, you'll have to enable it in the device's map list.

I created the map for you.

I deleted the funny connecting segments and changed the color of the interior regions to red (you might want some way of distinguishing the interior regions from the outside border.).

I got my GPSMAP 64st unit today. Placing the .img files directly into the unit works perfectly. I do have another question about creating the overlays. In the Lauderdale WMA.GPX file I sent you there was a few odd connecting trails that you removed. You also said that you changed the color of the regions. How did you do that? I did not see a way to do that in IMGfromGPX, so you must be using some other software to create the GPX.... then using IMGfrom GPX to create the .img file.

Can you tell me how you removed the extra trails in the original GPX?

    Thanks.
  • in my case I used GPSMapedit to separate and to do the transparent map.
for the color of the line I created a TYP file with TYPViewer

  • I suck at this. Either I am making it too hard or it is difficult to do.
Can you give me the run down on doing this with GPSMapEdit, step-by-step? I tried creating the .IMG file there but my map does not show on my device.

    You can use Basecamp.

1- Double click on the track. You should get a window with a list of track points.
2- Click on a track point in the list. The selected point is highlighted with a orange circle.
3- Hold the shift key down to select multiple points.

4- To delete the joins, select the point before and after the segment,
5- Right click the highlighted segment on the track in the map and select "Split track at segment").

You can change the color of a track by double clicking to get the list and then changing the color at the upper right of the window.

Using GPSMapEdit (not free) and TYP files is not easy to do.

Using Basecamp and imgfromgpx is easier (and it lets you use a program you might find more generally useful).

    ==============================

The track in my gpx file called "Outerwest 001" needs to have the first 4 points deleted. Those points overlap with the track called "Track 013" (which is supposed to be an interior region).

  • I spent some time in Base Camp and watched a couple Basecamp videos on editing tracks. I was having difficulty splitting the tracks, but after I figured out how to split the track up, it was easier to do. This is one video I watched that helped on editing the tracks. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jmP9KdsxIm0. Ater I got the tracks the cleaned up, I exported back to GPX. Then I watched this one about IMGfromGPX. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CnVtdhumNwE

Now I have the overlay on my unit and all is good. I will do some field tests this weekend to see how it works.

Thanks again for all the help.
