Waypoints not showing

Garmin Montana 610.
When I create a waypoint on the Garmin, it shows on the map that is on the screen. However, when I open that route in Basecamp, the waypoints do not show. I can't seem to find a menu item to turn them on. Can it be done or is this the way BC is supposed to work?

Thanks
  • I'm confused as at one point you mention waypoints then talk about routes. Just exactly what are you doing and what isn't happening as you'd expect?

Whenever I create a route or waypoint on my Montana they show in BaseCamp.
  • sorry, Sussamb. I'm likely using bad terminology.

When I start a kayak trip, I set a waypoint on the Montana at the start of the trip. I then paddle for some hours. On my return, I can see the waypoint on the Montana screen as I approach my starting point. So, I know that the waypoint was, in fact, set.

However, when I open that trip in BC, I can see the entire trip, but the waypoint does not show on the computer monitor. I was trying to see if I am missing a setting in BC that allows me to see the waypoint. I can't find any settings in any of the menus, but I may simply be overlooking it.

    thank you
  • Ah ok, that makes more sense. Check the filters at the bottom of the left hand pane. To see both the trip and the waypoint ensure the List icon is selected (left hand one of the 8 icons). If you can't see 8 icons click on the one at the right which will then reveal the various filters.
  • No joy, sussamb. The "show all user data" icon is selected. That is the leftmost icon. Next to it is an icon for "show waypoints". With the "show all user data" icon highlighted, the list of all my trips in the open folder is immediately above the icons. With that selected, the waypoint does not show on the map to the right of the list. If I select "show waypoints", the list disappears and it is replaced by a blank window that says "this filter is empty". With this icon selected, the waypoint does not show on the map either.

Just for the heck of it, I clicked on each of the icons in turn. None of them result in the waypoint showing on the map.
  • Sussamb: I've been looking on the Montana menus to see if maybe something there is not sending the info to BC. In the setup menu, under tracks, the advanced setup, there is an item entitled "trip recording". Mine is set to "when tracking".

I turned off the feature that has the unit start tracking as soon as it is turned on and acquires satellites. I tend to turn it on when we are setting up and that can be some time before we actually get the boats in the water. So, my process is, turn the unit on and let it acquire satellites, set a waypoint once it has done all that, then when we are ready to leave, turn on tracking. So, in other words, when I set the waypoint, the unit is not tracking. Could this setting affect in any way what info the Montana can send to BC?

Clearly, I am picking at straws here, so if I am demonstrating how little I understand about all this, please excuse the interruption.
  • Hmmm. Very strange. Not sure what else to suggest as waypoints have always worked for me but just confirm how you set the waypoint?
  • On the Montana main screen, I select "mark waypoint". The next screen shows the waypoint number being set. I click "save", and it returns to the previous screen.
  • Does it then show in the waypoint list? If so I'm stumped as to why it's not showing in BaseCamp.
  • Yes, if I open waypoint manager, they are there. If I tap one - the one from yesterday, for example, it opens a screen showing coordinates and elevation. If I tap view map, it opens a map showing the waypoint. From there, I can tap "go".
  • Then I have no other ideas. From what you say I'd expect it to show. Maybe try uninstalling and reinstalling BC?
