Installing maps on networked drive?

Because my laptop's C:\ drive is a small-capacity SSD, I store most of my data files (for all applications) on a mapped network drive (configured as my drive "P:". Therefore, I want to do likewise with Garmin Express's installed maps.

So, I am trying to copy the maps from my Zumo 340. I've already created and set up the maps folder as follows: P:\Data\Garmin Basecamp maps, and this location is embedded in my Garmin Express (I was also going to ask to change this, but have read the adjacent thread "Map Install Location" and learned that I'd need to reinstall Express to do so).

It goes through the procedure: Step 1 of 2... Step 2 of 2... Updating maps... Activating maps... and finishes with "There was an error installing the update" I can confirm that the target folder is still completely empty.

Any ideas please? Is the problem that the program doesn't support networked drives?
  • Not sure whether this will help but is your P drive a removable drive? If so you should be able to copy the map files from your Zumo to a folder named Garmin on that drive, and BaseCamp will read them from there.

Thanks for your reply. P:\ is a standalone Network Access Storage drive

If so you should be able to copy the map files from your Zumo to a folder named Garmin on that drive, and BaseCamp will read them from there.

Certainly I can manually copy files over to it from the Zumo if necessary. What folders do I need to copy? I don't actually see a 'maps' one on the Zumo; where do they live?! I don't see them.

When you say I need to copy to a folder named 'Garmin' on my P:\ drive, are you saying I'd need to create a root folder specifically called P:\Garmin? (which would mean uninstalling and reinstalling Garmin Express, to redefine the now-embedded maps folder), or can I just copy them over (when I locate them!) to my current maps folder, P:\Data\Garmin Basecamp maps?

    Thanks
  • BaseCamp will read the map files from any removable drive, so you can use a sd card, usb memory stick, virtual drive etc but they must be 'removable'. So whether this would work with your P drive I don't know.

To try it you must have the map files from your device, not those installed normally on your PC by Express, so no need to fiddle with that. The map files on your device are in a hidden system folder named .system and should be copied to a folder named Garmin in the root of the removable drive.

The .system folder is a hidden folder using the default Folder View Options in Windows. In order to see the .system folder you need to make Folder View Option changes in Windows as follows:

    Windows 8 and 10:

    1) Open the Control Panel. (Right click on the Windows square in the bottom left of your computer screen. Select Control Panel and click on it.)
    2) Inside Control Panel, click on "Appearance and Personalization", then "Folder Options" or “File Explorer Options". This will open the File Explorer Options window.
    3) Inside the File Explorer Options window, click on the "view" tab.

Select "Show hidden files, folders, and drives"
Remove check mark for “Hide Empty Drives”
Remove check mark for “Hide protected operating system files” (Recommended)”

    Windows 7:
    1) Open Windows Explorer and select Organise, Folder and Search Options
    2) Click the View tab.
    3) Uncheck ‘Hide protected operating system files.
    4) Check ‘Show hidden files, folders and drives’

In addition, since your device's storage is protected by using Media Transfer Protocol (MTP) by default you may also need to change your device to the more common Mass Storage mode in order for the .system folder to be visible in Windows. You can make this change by following these procedures:

    1. Bring up the volume screen on the GPS.

    2. On the upper right hand corner. Press your finger on screen and hold for appx 10 seconds.

    3. Shortly you will see the developers screen.

    4. Find MTP Settings and touch it (note on some models it’s under Configuration and Settings).

    5. It will show 3 selections. MTP Auto Detect, Mass Storage and Mass Storage Single Session.

    6. Touch Mass Storage as your selection.

    7. Select save.

Thanks very much for the detailed instructions!

I have located and copied all the files in the .system folder on my Zumo. I tried copying them to my P:\Garmin folder (ie on the network drive, but as you surmised, BaseCamp did not recognise the drive at all, so clearly the use of a network drive is not possible. I therefore tried copying the files to a USB drive instead (again, to a root Garmin folder). This time, the name of my map (City Navigator Europe NTU 2018.1) appeared in BaseCamp's Devices window; however, BaseCamp refused to load it up, instead generating a pop-up message "An error occurred when attempting to use the City Navigator Europe NTU 2018.1 Map Product". In case something had become corrupted in copying, I deleted the folder and tried again, with just the same outcome. BaseCamp will happily upload the map direct from the Zumo, however.

All very frustrating... any further ideas?!
  • Hmmm ... Not sure why that's occurring as I've never seen an issue like that, I and many others have been using that technique for years.

Is the card formatted FAT32? If not that is probably the issue.
  • So whether this would work with your P drive I don't know.

Windows doesn't consider network drives as "removable".

TI tried copying them to my P:\Garmin folder (ie on the network drive, but as you surmised, BaseCamp did not recognise the drive at all, so clearly the use of a network drive is not possible.

This won't work. Basecamp only looks at drives that are flagged as "removable".

You can create a "virtual disk" that makes it look like a file is a removable disk. The file can be on any drive.

    I use this:

You might not be able to copy the Zumo map (the map could be locked to the device).

You should try it with the Zumo unconnected when are using copies of the maps.

You might want to have a small test map that you can try your disk setup.

You can get maps from the following (use the "Perhaps you'd like to add some additional tiles?" option to get a small map).

  • It doesn't matter that the map is locked to the device, BaseCamp will still read it off a removable drive so in this case there must be another issue.

There are 2 kinds of maps:
    - Garmin computer based maps (in 2 kinds, registry and gmap located).
    - Garmin device based maps.

As I now understand it's about moving the computer based maps. And thats very easy. Probably the most easy way is to use JaVaWa GMTK tool to move the maps to the P drive. It support registry and gmap maps.

The GMAP map is the most simple, after installation and activation, move the mapname.gmap to a location on disk P and make a shortcut to this gmap folder in de C:\ProgramData"Garmin\Map\ folder.
The registry kind can also me moved, but the manual editing of the windows registry is needed (or use the above tool).

In case of device maps, use first a disk virtualisation procedure and place the image somewhere on your P drive. (

You can also direct all from C:\ProgramData\Garmin\Maps to P:\Garmin\Maps using a directory link method, but that mean the P disk must always stay connected, its a hard link.
Or if P is inly needed for maps, then don't give the disk a drive letter, but "mount" it into a directory.

Thanks. I couldn't work out how to create a virtual removable disk on my network access drive (is it actually possible? Otherwise this is no good to me) which is what I'd need to do, but to test it out I created one on my SSD C: drive., and transferred the Zumo's map over to that. Basecamp duly recognised a map on the new virtual disk, but came back with the same error message as it did when I used the real thumb drive.

Thank you - I copied a map from here over to my virtual disk, and although it did upload into BaseCamp, it turned out to be a map of the whole world rather than just the UK which I was expecting; the image was 'stretched' significantly North-South; and the level of detail was minimal (ie comparable to BaseCamp's default global map.

Thanks - this sounds very plausible, but unfortunately it's over my head: you lost me at "JaVaWa GMTK tool"!
