turn ON snap to trail setting

I'm new to this forum. I have an Oregon 450, which I bought five years ago in the UK, along with the entire Lake District Ordnance Survey maps. I have basecamp on Windows 7.

What I want to do is have the route I create from waypoints snap to the trail, but it doesn't; it just makes a random route that sometimes is north of the trail and sometimes south of it, but not on the trail. Sometimes the route it plots takes me across what looks like on the map to be completely unnavigable. It has me crossing a stream twice, whereas the trail on the map stays on the same side of the stream for its entire path.

I've looked at tutorials here:

http://www8.garmin.com/learningcenter/training/basecamp/#PC

They don't seem to work on my PC version of basecamp. Or at least they're not applicable; I can't find anything that actually shows plotting a route on a trail map.

I'm using the New Waypoint tool to set waypoints along the trail and then the New Route tool to connect them (by dragging the start and end points into the dialog). If instead I close the dialog and just draw the route with the New Route tool, it makes a similarly unusable route, with the additional complication of adding unwanted side jogs to points I have clicked on that it seems not to "like."

I'm making a return trip to the UK and if I can't create routes here on my PC and transfer them to the Garmin there's no point in bringing the Garmin along. Also, how to I create routes on the Garmin itself (because I won't be bringing my computer along)? I have two weeks to get this to work. I hope someone will be kind enough to provide instructions or point me to the best place to look.

Thank you.
  • OS maps aren't routeable so you need to select Direct activity and create a route that way.

What you're seeing is BaseCamp trying to use the underlying road map, which it will try to do on any other activity you select.

Again as the map isn't routeable you can only create routes on your GPS using direct routing.

Thank you. That's the first explanation I've seen of what's going on.

I did what you said. Since the trail curves around a bit I created 11 waypoints on the trail and used the New Route tool, selecting Direct as the Activity. I dragged the first waypoint to "Drag start point here" and the last to "Drag destination here." I then clicked Go and it created the same path as in my earlier description, that is, not along the trail as I had marked but (apparently) on some underlying road as you suggested. (By the way, there is no road for 2/3 of the way, so I can't imagine what it's picking up. That is, most of the path is along fells and cliffs. The route I chose goes nicely along the 1/3 where the OS map has an actual road, but when it meets the trail it just follows some imagined route and actually misses some of the waypoints.) Is there a mechanism for dragging portions of the route over to where the trail actually is on the map? Do I have to make a new route for every place the trail curves? That would be most inconvenient to follow, because whenever I encountered the end of a route somewhere out in the middle of nowhere how would I find the start of the next route?

Also, is there any way of creating new routes on the Garmin itself when I'm actually in the Lake District?
  • To ensure the route is using direct activity open the route properties by right clicking the route in the lower left hand pane. Check the drop down box top right'ish shows Direct.

When it does you should only see straight lines between the various points.

Once that's working correctly, and with the route selected, you can 'rubber band' any part of the route you wish. Either right click the route and select Insert waypoint or press the Alt key on your keyboard then click on the route.

If you aren't getting straight lines are you able to post a screenshot so we can see what's happening?

You can create routes on your device by selecting Route Planner.

Attached are screenshots (numbered per the following):
    1. Menus:
    2. Waypoints
    3. New Route dialog
    4. After specifying start and destination. Note that Activity is Direct
    5. The route it created
    6. I right-clicked the route in the left pane
    7. The dropdown shows Direct
    8. “When it does you should only see straight lines between the various points.”
I was able to put two bends in the route, but it’s still a straight line for most of the route. As you can see, four of the waypoints have been missed.
    9. Right-clicking the route under My Collection does not offer an Insert Waypoint choice
    10. Right-clicking a position on the actual route does not offer an Insert Waypoint choice
    11. Neither does right-clicking the start of the route
The uploader allows me to load only five files so I'll add the remaining six in two more messages.

    11. Neither does right-clicking the start of the route
  • Well all that looks correct but:

    8. You can't simple expect it to add those waypoints. The route is straight between the points, you'll see two black dots that are also part of the route. If you wish to add further points use the rubber band technique I've already described. Alternatively in Route Properties you'll see an 'Add' sign on the right. Click on that to add existing waypoints to the route.

    10. Which version of BaseCamp are you using? The right click menu option of 'Insert into route' is a relatively recent addition.

Your best bet though if you wish to have all those waypoints in the route is to select them all in the lower left hand pane. With them all selected right click and select 'Create route from selected waypoints'. Note select them in the order you wish to visit them by using Ctrl + click otherwise they may not be in the correct order. If not though there are arrow keys on the right in Route Properties that allow you to move waypoints up or down or you can just use drag and drop.

Note too that you don't need to use the New route box. Click the x top right to close it. Now you can simply create a route by clicking the start point on the map, and adding more points by clicking on the points as you go. When you've finished right click to escape.

As you can see creating a route is possible in numerous ways, you just need to find the way that is best for you.

Thank you. That works well. I just deleted the route I had created and made a new one with the New Route tool.

And the video you linked to is very helpful.

    Again, thanks!
  • Great, glad it's sorted. Enjoy your trip, the Lake District is a great place for walking :)

    finding things

With the Ordnance Survey maps of the Lake District loaded into basecamp, how do I find features or places on the maps? For example, I want to find Wasdale Head. First it tells me that it can't find it. Then it shows me under Adventures a downloadable route Wasdale Head - Greate Gable, and maps it for me, which I suppose would be useful if I wanted to make that hike, but what I want is just to have the Find function take me to Wasdale Head. Or how do I find Black Sail Pass? That search produces nothing.

    Thanks.
