Unwanted Loops in Route

When planning a route using using the "New Route" tool and using a mouse to click shaping points, there will frequently occur unwanted short loops in the route. These are double U-turns. Also frequently I will get unwanted "T" turnoff and back on the route. I can fix these used the "Divide" tool and delete unwanted sections then carefully with the map expanding add back in the desired segment.

Is there a way to fix this without a detail inspection of the entire route to find these anomolies and then having to delete individual sections and re-route?
  • Via Points in the Summary area of the Route Properties tab correspond to Route Points supplied by the user (i.e. by clicking on the map, adding Waypoints or POI’s). What is important about this number is that devices have limits on how many can be handled. For example, my outdoor device will handle 250 user points for a Direct Activity Profile, but only 50 for any other Activity Profile. If these numbers are exceeded, there will be issues on the device.

I have never been able to find out what the Points number in the summary area of the Route Properties tab references. My guess would be that it relates to how the application depicts a system of roads. For example, the system could be represented as a table of nodes with adjacent nodes along with inter-nodal distance where a node is any location where two roads (or road and ramp) intersect. Additional non-intersecting locations may be required to improve distance accuracy. Basically I suspect that Points is a rough following of routable features.

I do not know if the Points number has significance with respect to devices. Worse case would be that this number can not exceed the number of user points for a Direct Route. What it does not refer to is the actual number of points the make up the line seen on the map. (For example, for your 346 mile Max Gravel North of Dallas adventure, I was able to get a Driving Route down to 50 Via Points/249 Point but the actual number of point in the .gpx file was ~3350.)

Back to your original question, there is no easy way make corrections. What I would suggest is that you open the Route Properties, check the Center Map box lower left of window. Reposition the Window so that the Map is visible and the Distance column in the Properties Window is visible. Select the first point in the Route Properties list and the map should zoom to that location. If the point needs to be adjusted, note the Distance in the properties Window then use the Move tool to reposition the point.

If you don’t have to move a point, you can use the down arrow key to scroll down the until you find a point that needs to be moved.

If you have to move a point, use the slider on the Properties Window to find the ~ Distance of the last point you moved. Click on that point and continue with the down arrow key. Remember to uncheck Center Map when you are finished.

Thanks for pointing to your adventures as they provided a clearer idea of your routing issues.

I am not on the latest version of BaseCamp. I do know there have been requests for a “snap to routable feature” option when creating non-Direct Routes, but I don’t know if it ever made the "to do" list.
  • And, they are very nicely done! Thanks.

Sure hope I get a chance to get back down to Texas this year to try out some of your adventures. Rode the Hill Country for a week last year.

Thanks. If you do come to Texas (or Southern California, I live in both places)and would like to partner up email me. I put my email in the published Adventure descriptions hoping someone would contact me to ride together. The "Beautiful North Texas" adventure is kinda of the culmination of the best of the 1000's of miles If ridden in that area. It has good sightseeing and a good mix of paved and unpaved. I ride basically street tires (Battlewings 80/20s) so I would suspect you would do well with your BMW.
  • Thanks BTLaake. Thats kind of what Im doing to correct anomalies created when I use the mouse to enter a via point and before I upload to the GPS.
One technique I use to find and correct misplaced via points is to view the properties window and scroll down while viewing distance between each via point. If the distance between 2 points is 0, most of the time it is a mistake made when creating the route with a mouse click and I simply delete the point and recalculate.

Another is to run the simulation at 100x and watch the arrow move along the route. A sudden double u turn or T indicates a problem. Then zoom in that area and delete or correct as you describe.

A 3rd is to expand the map and move the map to inspect the route and correct as described above.

The last is to while riding, ignore the GPS prompt to make a U turn or turn of the route. This requires a bit of familiarity with the route.
