BaseCamp 4.6.2 is available

We've just released a new version of BaseCamp. You can download it at http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=4435. Updating from within the app will be available shortly.

We've interacted with a number of users that helped us track down some pesky bugs. Thank you so much for your assistance. We appreciate it very much.

  • Added support for downloading preview imagery for BirdsEye Select.
  • Added support for displaying DEM shading for some cycling map products.
  • Added support for track metadata from FIT files.
  • Improved entry of position coordinates on the Waypoint Properties dialog.
  • Improved performance of some track editing operations on the map.
  • Updated the Czech translation for 'road'.
  • Updated route avoidance settings to be more like PNDs.
  • Fixed BaseCamp incorrectly showing certain maps on card or device as locked.
  • Fixed route via departure dates not always showing as expected on the Route Properties dialog.
  • Fixed routes created in BaseCamp not displaying lane assist and junction views on some nuvi devices.
  • Fixed geocaches not correctly showing as found on Oregon devices.
  • Fixed search issue in some maps.
  • Fixed issue canceling route calculations.
  • Fixed out of memory crashes related to the undo buffer growing too large.
  • Fixed incorrect total space shown in the Device Information dialog for some nuvi and zumo devices.
  • Fixed Send To Device and Receive From Device dialogs sometimes not allowing the user to select a device.
  • Fixed an issue with BaseCamp prompting that old software updates are available.
  • Fixed other various bugs.

Addendum: we've just released 4.6.2. This is a bug fix release which addresses a common crash.

  • Fixed an issue displaying route elevation graphs

Yes, it's running 5.30. The lane assist works OK (and always has done) but the 'photo' of motorway junctions only pops up on routes the Nuvi has calculated/recalculated itself.
  • Have you tried a master reset of your device?

No. It is all set up for a big trip in 2 weeks time, so I'm not going to try that until after then.

It has always been this way since new so I just assumed it was an incompatibility with Basecamp, but having seen the release notes at the start of this thread I realised it probably should work. Could whatever was done in the last release maybe not work on the Nuvi 2597 but is OK on the 2508?
  • Unlikely as they're both the same series but anythings possible of course. On long trips you should IMO always do a recalculate anyway, otherwise if you make an error it will recalculate and may introduce changes which you won't either be aware of or able to correct.

    Thanks for your reply.

Yes, if you stray off route it can introduce some interesting quirks to the journey! I put plenty of routing points in to help things in that situation, but I am pretty sure on a few occasions when I've been forced off route by unexpected road closures I have been able to stop the navigation, load a another saved route and hit 'Go', then stop that and reload the original route and the rest of the journey follows my original saved route rather than the one the unit had recalculated.

This certainly used to be the case with my old Quest - the 'working' memory for the live route (and any recalculations) was separate from the memory used to store the list of routes loaded from Mapsource. You had to actually save the route the unit had recalculated if you wanted to keep it, the original route was left untouched.

I know that if I load a route from Trip Planner, hit Go, then tell it to do a detour, it says 'recalculating' and shows the new route with the detour. If I then stop the navigation and call up the original route from Trip Planner it is still the original Basecamp route, so I think it works the same as the old Quest.

Another thing I've noticed is the estimated journey time for routes set up in Basecamp is very accurate. When they are loaded into the Nuvi, the times are still OK, but if the Nuvi recalculates, even if it is exactly the same route, the journey time estimates go up by about 30-40%! I can't find anywhere in the Nuvi to enter average speeds for different road types like you can in Basecamp.

I will try a factory reset in three weeks time if necessary, but it is not the end of the world if the junction view won't work. It is still a great little unit.
  • Agreed on reusing the original route if you realise it's gone off route and if you know roughly where you are so you can select the next sensible via point! Good luck with your trip :)
  • Printing issues

There are times that you just can't beat having a printed map with your tracks and waypoints on it. Especially if you have access to a printer that will print 11X17 in color. :D

Printing is a challenge in BaseCamp. Some of the things that make it difficult are:

    1. Most annoying - I had a custom map overlay and wanted printouts both with and without the overlay. I turned on "Hide Overlays" and positioned the screen how I wanted. The print preview shows the map without the overlay. The printout printed with the overlay even though it was not showing on the preview. The only way to accomplish this was to temporarily move the custom map to another list.

    2. BaseCamp is the only application I have that does not remember the chosen printer and it's settings from one printout to the next. It always resets everything back to the defaults, even if I printed something 2 minutes ago. This includes map centering, too.

    3. It sure would be nice if there were smaller steps in the zoom function so we could fit our maps to the paper better. Or better yet, allow typing in a percentage, like the system printer dialog does.

    4. We can multi-select waypoints and set them to only display symbol or symbol and name, etc. We cannot do that with geocaches. With geocaches, you can only set those properties one at a time. It will not allow us to multi-select and set those options. That seems like an oversight, since it supports doing that with waypoints. It would be even better if there were options to turn on and off titles in the Display properties and Page Setup panel.
  • This is false:

"Fixed routes created in BaseCamp not displaying lane assist and junction views on some nuvi devices."

I own a 2599 Nuvi and this still fails. Junction views and lane assist does not work on routes created in BaseCamp and sent to the device using normal methods. They also cannot round-trip likely for the same reason. Please fix.
  • Works on mine. Are you running the latest software on your device? Has it been master reset?
  • Yes to both counts. There is still something not right. In fact, I updated the device prior to attempting a trip download.
