Basecamp Frustration - Unit item management

Hi folks.

Well, been editing POIs and entries in my GPSmap 62stc for a couple hours now. Been shoving POIs into the unit as proper POIs instead of waypoints, in order to save memory. Been trimming routes and tracks imported from various sources, down so that they too don't take up too much memory.

I keep deleting items using command-delete (Mac) but they don't want to go away. They keep coming back.

What am I doing wrong? I clean up my contents directly on the unit, but it doesn't go away.

Why is this so difficult? Am I missing something?

Any advice/insight appreciated. Would be nice if Garmin chimed up. Years using this software and it's as confusing as day one.

Thank you.

Cheers
  • Are you emptying the trash since you're using a mac? That's normally the issue when supposed deleted items keep coming back.
  • Hi there. There's always been nothing in the trash. Just checked again, and only some points/track points were in there. It's a funky system.
  • Well some gpx files are there somewhere. Basecamp will delete what it can see on your GPS but clearly won't see .gpx that aren't in the GPX folder. Garmin GPS though can hoover up files from all sorts of folders on the GPS or card.

I suggest you do a search on your device and card for .gpx files and remove any that aren't in the GPX folder, then ensure the trash is empty. Do the same for .gpi files if you've been sending POI files. If you do that the only data you should see on both BaseCamp and your device should agree.

I've used BaseCamp with multiple GPS devices for years and not had a problem deleting data.
  • Just checked. Nothing on the card, and all gpx files inside the GPX folder on the main internal memory.
  • What files are in the GPX folder?

Also please clarify an earlier statement. You say you 'clean up your contents directly on the unit, but it doesn't go away'. What do you mean by that? How is that linked to Basecamp?

What data 'keeps coming back'? And is this in Basecamp or the GPS or both?

Something weird is going on here but I suspect it's me not understanding your problem clearly enough.

Inside Basecamp, I edit items on the unit and toss others out that I don't want. The items in the unit keep coming back. I don't edit files on the GPS unit in the Finder directly. I always go through Basecamp.

I restarted my MacBook Air and zapped the PRAM 3 times. I minimized the map regions and did a fresh install, as at one point it was telling me that a route I downloaded (generated from a website), was made on a map that wasn't installed on my unit. It seems to be working now. But never have I seen anything show up in the trash.
  • Sorry, must be me this morning but I'm even more confused. You say the 'items in the unit keep coming back', then 'it seems to be working now'. So is the problem resolved?
  • Heh, you're as confused as I am. Now the modifications are indeed sticking. They were not before.

I'm sending a 4200-point route to the unit, and it's taking forever though. It is a route designed on a site and it is asking me to recalculate the points and I denied that, as it's copied from an official site. Any ideas for optimization?
  • Think you'll just need to wait.

Good to know your problem is sorted though.
  • It's crashed 3 times now sending to the unit. Translating that track to a route really messes the whole thing up.
