Reading Third party Maps

I have a basic question:

How is Basecamp able to read and render a third party map installed in an SD card (or an internal memory of the device) without it being installed on the computer (Mac)? Does it then mean; all it needs is only IMG and unlock code? When I connect a device via USB to the computer (Mac) and open Basecamp, I can browse the map installed on the device.

So every time, if I cannot install a third party map on the computer, all I then need to do is create a Garmin folder in a USB drive copy the valid IMG and UNL file, connect the drive to the computer and open Basecamp to enable me to browse the map?
  • Sorry but you're confusing me. We've discussed how you get the maps to be seen in Basecamp, you then mention mac and Mapsource, Mapsource is a Windows program. In any case I thought you wanted to move your map from the card to your nuvi so it worked from the internal memory of your nuvi?

Moving a working map from a card to the Map folder of your nuvi will work, assuming you move as well any other necessary files.
  • I was trying the other approach only because a basic copy into the device internal memory was not working. Hence I was trying instal the map in mapsource/basecamp. This way once I install the map in the computer, I can then further instal the map into the device via basecamp/mapinstall.

I will try reset the device once again and try to copy.
  • I tried to use the SD card. I think the map has an issue. Simply because I cannot see all the tiles cleanly. Some of them seem to miss. Will go back to map provider to check. I also tried to check the content of the image via gmaptool. I see that there is a sequencing error.
  • I figured out the problem. The device does not support two versions of the same map. I deleted an earlier version installed in the device. And then when I put the SD card containing the new version, it works problem.
But I still cannot copy the map image into device memory from SD card. It basically says it cannot unlock the map. I copied both the map and the unlock code into the Map folder in the device.

But still I some how can read the new map version in the device (through SD card). Are the unlock codes tied to the SD card and hence cannot work when copied to a different location (device memory in this case)?
  • It depends on the map and how it was acquired. Some maps are locked to a card, some aren't ... you really need to ask the map provider as I'm not familiar with the map you're talking about.
  • The provider mentioned the license is locked to the SD card. I think that may be the reason, I am not able to either movie to the device memory or even compile it for Basecamp.
