As for transferring categories between BaseCamp and MapSource, you should be able to use GPX...

FYI MapSource only supports 16 categories. nuvi's support up to 200.

How many favorites categories can be created on an automotive device?

    I assume BC doesn't have a limit.

MapSource uses a 16-bit bitmap for waypoint categories. Thus any given waypoint can be in 0-16 categories.

PS: I'm pretty sure MapSource won't assign category names by reading a GPX/GDB file. As I recall MS only writes categories. You assign category names in

Edit -> Preferences -> Waypoint Categories (tab)
  • Waypoint categories are only supported on mass storage GPSs, not older Garmin mode devices. Our release note should have been clearer. As for transferring categories between BaseCamp and MapSource, you should be able to use GPX, but I haven't tried that experiment. Sorry for the miscommunication.

Understandable but disappointing. Garmin has to realize that planned obsolescence isn't the way to sell product. Thanks for the reply.
  • Bug or teaser?

I noticed an option in the route properties window to "Optimize" a route. Trying to do so on a moderately complex problem resulted in a crash, multiple times. It then occurred to me that this might not even be operational yet. So, Bug or Teaser? :)

Crashes every time I try to optimize a route. I don't think a teaser would be crashing the program. What kind of optimizing is it suppose to do?
  • Sadly the feature works...but we are changing our strings over for better localization and that one fell through the cracks. Optimize Route will reorder the points of a route to make for the "shortest" route. There are limitations to its powers, but it works pretty well.
  • Can't install it without overwriting the existing BaseCamp. The installer should allow installing to a sequestered and safe location, while keeping the "good" BaseCamp available and operational.

Not a bad suggestion. For now you can rename the current BaseCamp to BaseCamp4.2 and then run either. However, the data you create/change after you install 4.3 will not show up in 4.3, because the 4.2 data has already been ported to 4.3 data when you ran the beta. The 4.3 data can always be deleted, which will cause the port to happen again, but that complexity has kept us from recommending two simultaneous versions.

    That is correct

OK, seems I was overly optimistic. You are probably correct, though I'm not quite sure why. I assume we didn't want to use up the user's 16 categories by importing a GPX file. I will admit to having not run MapSource in several years.

    How to implement Waypoint categories?
In Mapsource I created categories, assigned a symbol to that category, then I could display waypoints assigned to a given category. (Then uses this to play with POI loader)
In BC I can assign a category through waypoint references... Then what?
How to get the best of category in BC Mac?
What was the idea of the developer?

    Garmin Connect activities
BC crashes every time I try to download activity from Garmin Connect. Display of the same activity in Garmin connect works fine.
  • I have noticed the following two minor issues:
    * when selecting a route in the previous version you would see the route in a more intense colour, plus there were arrows visible at intervals showing travel direction. The new beta version does not do this.
    * If I zoom in on the route, I can frequently find small spikes where the via point has gone about 30-50m into the non road area.

    Thanks, Joachim
