I just got my BMW Navigator V - had a 2610 some time ago and the Navigator V is a different beast. With the 2610 I could access maps on my PC and make up routes at my leisure but with the Navigator V there are no maps to look at on my Mac (v10.9.1) and do the same as I did with the 2610. I have downloaded WebUpdater and Garmin Express but no idea what to do next, as nothing happens when i launch either App!

Also, the clock on my Navigator V does not display the current time automatically - when it should be showing UK time. For example its now 13:20 and the clock (on auto) says 6:11 !!!

Regards

Bob
  • Do you have/have you ever got a satellite lock? If not the time could well be out.

Are you using Basecamp to access the maps on your Nav V? It will read the maps off your GPS.

WebUpdater will update the software on your GPS if it's connected and if any updates are available.

Express does the same but will also update your maps (when it does so you can also install the map onto your mac so Basecamp will no longer require your GPS to be plugged in to see the map)
  • If it's never had a lock that is why the time is out.

Which program did you use before to do your route planning?

Basecamp is now the one recommended by Garmin, there are videos here that may help you http://www8.garmin.com/learningcenter/training/basecamp/

(I've moved this thread to the Basecamp forum)

I need to go outside, "lock on" and see if the time changes.

As SUSSAMB said that's exactly what you need to do. You should probably leave it on for about 15-20 mins so it gets a full Almanac.

FYI the timezone of a brand new unit is usually where it was manufactured. It seems yours is UTC-7 which is US Mountain time. Interesting because I think Garmin makes most of their stuff in Taiwan (UTC+7 or 8). Or perhaps I have your times backwards.

...is there a way of getting the route planner/mapper to stick to major routes?

    Read this.

    Routing is insane
  • I've got the time zone sorted now, just wandered into my garden and hey presto - strange that the dealer in the UK didn't do that for me!

I would like an option to create a Waypoint using an actual postal address but I can't find out how to do this. Also, quite annoying is that when I use Google maps it can find an address I give it to search, literally in seconds, and yet Garmin Basecamp cannot even find the same addresses - most infuriating indeed!. First impressions aren't favourable - it does appear very clunky in this 21st century world - I give it 4 out of 10.

Not sure why you think your dealer would turn on your GPS for you?

As for address search, the Windows version works fine and I suspect the mac does too, as I don't have one I can't suggest the best method, maybe someone else can.

Soooo, you would like BaseCamp to respond as quickly as Google search. Okay here is what you do, go to your local Apple Store and purchase 1.5 million Mac Pro Quad Core's with 64GB of memory each. That will give you about 1/10th as many CPU's and memory as Google has dedicated to Map Address Searching. Oh, can't quite swing that? Okay, then you could try one of these methods: ;)

Narrow your "on screen" search area. If you are searching for an address in a state, zoom in to at least the state level. Then, type in the Street address ONLY. If you don't get a hit, you may not have typed in the proper Street Name as it is coded in the map (BaseCamp is only searching the current Map Product being displayed). Try using LESS info in your search is always the best approach.

I often search the City, State name first if I know it. Then I put in the address as above. I seem to have a pretty good success rate on Address Search in the current Mac-BC.
  • Well I suspect being a BMW dealer he's up to speed on the bikes but not on GPS. He may very well have popped it into the cradle to check it would switch on, but if he did that inside it wouldn't have got a satellite lock.
  • I think DRTBYK was simply being facetious rather than 'dishing out tirades', if you look at his other posts he does provide 'help and counselling', sometimes the written word doesn't quite convey the meaning :)

Moving on to your search problem, I too am in the UK and Basecamp easily finds postcodes, at least on the Windows version. It also easily finds addresses. There are occasionally issues though with Basecamp reading maps off an SD card and then trying to locate addresses IIRC, is your map on the device itself or an installed card? You also need to ensure the map is actually selected in Basecamp as there are no postcodes, or indeed any real detail, in the Basecamp 'basemap'.

My my DRTBYK, got out of bed on the wrong side - your "Soooo......" rant isn't particularly welcoming: as the thread stated I am a newbie to Basecamp!!! Dan, I would have thought that the "master" attribute displayed against your moniker was more akin to providing help and counselling rather than dishing out tirades?

Having said that, by way of explanation, in the UK you can narrow down a country-wide location fairly accurately by entering the postcode only (only then requiring the house number/name), but when I did it didn't find what I wanted, I then tried adding country, county, street and house number, and postcode but it failed to find it. Because I didn't really know where the location I wanted was in Greater London, UK I found that when I used Google I found what I wanted almost immediately, then I switched screens and then narrowed the location comparing maps - that's how I ended up finding where I wanted to go.

I did - probably wrongly - think that because I had european maps on my Navigator that Basecamp would be looking at these! Hope this explanation helps?

I will persevere and hopefully my experience gained will aid me in my challenge.

    Bob,

Sorry that my satire wasn't more obvious. SUSSAMB, gave you the same advice I would have. With v4.2.4 and newer CNEU maps, I have not had any real problem doing Postal Code and Address searches.

If you are still having issues finding a particular Address post it here and we can try to figure out if it's process or map data related.

It was to me and I got a good chuckle out of it :)

Just part of just one of Googles Data Centers. DRTBYK was about right with the numbers.
