BaseCamp 4.2 beta is live

BaseCamp 4.2.0.2 introduces several new features and fixes some old issues. The Trip Planner, changeable libraries, significant improvement in find, and different profiles for legs of a route are some of the biggies. Note that several features are still a work in progress, but we wanted to go ahead and get feedback on the current state.

A complete list of features:
• Added Trip Planner (work-in-progress) (MacOS 10.7+ only)
• adds easy way to create trips
• create trips over several days
• round trip support
• printing trips
• add destinations along the route
• flying support (airport and flight look-up)
• time zone support
• Added initial support for different libraries which is patterned after iPhoto libraries. Feel free to try the feature out, but note that the next version will possibly break libraries created in this beta. This feature can be found under Preferences->Advanced->Workspaces
• Added support for different route profiles for different legs of a route
• Added support to have different folders and lists with the same name (as long as they have a different parent in the folder hierarchy)
• Added support for UK postal code search
• Added support for Yelp search (work-in-progress)
• Added support for named search (far away POIs should be found if it's an exact name match)
• Added support for category search (you can type "Hotels, Las Vegas, NV")
• Added quick search (hover over the map to invoke it)
• Added Irish Transverse Mercator grid
• Added support for displaying BirdsEye while in Basestation mode
• Added support for displaying and saving the track of the Basestation itself
• Added support for displaying the most recent update time for Basestation contacts
• Fixed issue with Garmap Southern Africa Topo & Rec 2012.3 - NT not being displayed BaseCamp

It can be downloaded from here

Edit: The second beta drop (BaseCamp 4.2.0.4) is now live. Use the above link to get it or go to https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?36289-BaseCamp-4-2-beta-is-live&p=179071#post179071 for more details. Note that 4.2.0.2 will not autoupdate to 4.2.0.4. You will need to manually update.

    Feature Request: Join Selected Routes

One of the up or down-sides of needing to work on both the Windows and Mac OS version is that I see all of the things that are inconsistent between the two. Some of those inconsistencies are due to OS requirements but when it comes to user-functions, I don't understand why one OS gets a user-function and the other doesn't. Is it truly the "squeaky wheel gets the grease" scenario?

May we please have "Join Selected Routes" function into v4.2?

I think I mentioned a ways back that, "...as soon as you give us a feature we'll ask for more.".

Well, could we please have the ability to size the Overview Map to full screen like the Windows version does? I have an iMac that screams on two 27" displays and even on my MacBook Air 13", the display performance isn't that bad driving two displays.

    Toolbar changes....

The ability to create custom Activities and save them for quick access great. I have four Motorcycle Icons that represent very different routing Activities. But, without the ability to add custom Icon images v4.2.0.4 has created a real problem for me by only showing the Activity Icon in the pulldown-button. I'm constantly having to check the pull-down every time I create/change a route to make sure it is the "right" Activity for what I'm doing.

Please, either provide an option to "Show Activity Text" in the Pulldown and/or enable custom Icons for Activities. I'd vote for both.

    Cheers,
  • - First thing that got my attention is that the BC Toolbar Icons went to grayscale - don't like it. To hard to differentiate icons when not using text+icon.

    - I understand the Delta Speed-slider for Routing road-types. But, it would be so much more informative if you just showed the programmed "default speed" after the named road-types (see example) so folks new to this don't have to figure it out on their own:

The default Speed Adjustment doesn't work for me as is, it needs the ability to adjust road types individually as Dan has indicated. Boosting the default speed to get to a reality based Interstate pace means a 10 to 15 kph increase for me. Not a good idea on city streets.

    Trip Planner: Activity type ...bugs

    • Trip Planner default Activity type is Driving irregardless of the current BaseCamp Activity setting.
    • When a route is created it has the Driving Activity but when changed to a different Activity in Trip Planner the Route properties (Info) window shows Mixed Travel even when all legs of the route are the same Activity (e.g, Motorcycling).
    • The View Detail Data function shows the original Activity of Driving even after the route has been edited to another Activity type in Trip Planner and the Route Info has been manually changed from Mixed Travel to another Activity type.

    Cheers,
  • My issue may be related. Changing the activity of a route, created outside of Trip Planner, in the route properties window and recalculating does nothing. The default activity properties are retained and the activity name reverts to the one used during creation.
  • The ability to create custom Activities and save them for quick access great. I have four Motorcycle Icons that represent very different routing Activities. I second this. It would also be very helpful to those of us that sometimes don't use a toolbar to have the activities drop-down included in the menu bar. Add the ability to assign hot keys for different activities and you'd have it nailed IMO.

    Route Info: Cmd-K Hot-key

    Speaking of Hot-key's...

Using the Cmd-K hot-key when you are in the Route-Info window and have a Via Point selected has no effect.

    1. This will be fixed in the release.
    2 & 3. I will investigate.
