Trying to figure out how to edit the routing method. defaults to along-road routing method. I just completed an update to the software and it was not an issue before.

any suggestions? I have the trailhead, waypoints, and destination input but the route takes you off trail and onto roads.... no clue how to fix it...

Thank you.

so the question is how to turn off the along-road routing...... please help.

Click the drop-down button at the top right area of the route window (with the particular route opened) and choose "Direct Routing". You can also change the default-routing style to "Direct Routing" by clicking a similar-looking drop-down in the top right area of the app itself.

Thank you for your help..... I wonder if it may make sense to edit the "hiking/mountaineering" options to follow either trails, or waypoints.... it seems unlikely that either would follow an "along-road" option.

I agree entirely. I spent ages trying to work out how to do this. Obviously the hiking/mountaineering default should be direct navigation not alongside roads.

Thought I had sorted this. In Basecamp I switched to direct routing and created the cross country route. However, when I transfer this to my Montana 650 the routing switched back to on the road. Does anybody know what I am doing wrong?
  • You have to set your Montana to use direct routing too.

Thanks. I guessed so but cannot see how to do that - any suggestions?

    on road routing

i am also trying to create routes in Basecamp and couldnt work out, why it wasnt working out as i predicted.

and then in realised that it was because walking is set to follow roads ?? very weird

To have to change to direct routing is not the best option because now the timing feature does not work.

This is a very poor excuss of something which has obviously been overlooked.

Surely this should be changed by Garmin to make it work properly and produce effective 'Route cards' with estimated timings in minutes and hours etc.

Please can this be looked at by Garmin in the next update

  • This is not a basecamp issue. If the map contains routeable trails then BC will route down them. I don't know which map you're using but if it's a map that only has routeable roads then any profile will route along the roads apart from direct.

    Along Road versus Direct Routing

I have worked regularly with the Basecamp software for over two years. i am very disappointed by the present routing features with "alon the road" defaults that does not appear to be easily modified in the system preferences to "direct routing' Profiles like :Hiking" Mountaineering" and "Biking" definately are not always "along roads"...Come on Garmin, give your head a shake and fix this quickly.
