BaseCamp 4.0 beta posted

BaseCamp 4.0 is here. We believe this beta to be reasonably stable, but it is a Beta, so there are definitely some quirks to be expected.

If you do find any bugs, crashes or have input of any kind, please let us know. You can respond to this forum post, create a new thread, use the error reporting functionality or use the “Send Feedback…” option within BaseCamp. If you find a bug, don’t just think “It’s Beta, it will be fixed”, please report it.

For Garmin Adventures BaseCamp will display surveys. Please take a second to fill it out let us know what you think. They are very short.

You can download the installer here.

A few words about your data
When you install 4.0.0.4, all your data from 3.3 (or earlier) will be copied. You can keep using 3.3 afterwards, 4.0 will not alter your 3.3 data (but 3.3 also cannot see any changes you make with 4.0).

Change list

This is the list of changes. There is a separate thread What’s new in BaseCamp 4.0 that gives some more explanations (please excuse the Windows screenshots until I get a chance to create a Mac version. The features are basically identical between the two platforms), and a Garmin Adventures thread that introduces that new feature (again please excuse the Windows screenshots).

Added support for Garmin Adventures.
Added support to search for adventures.
Added support for transferring adventures to devices.
Added support for authoring and publishing adventures.
Added chase camera adventure playback.
Other New Features
Added intersection search. If you add an '&' between two roads, it will find the intersection, e.g. 'Main & Elm'
Added support for BaseStation mode for Rinos and Astros. Firmware support coming soon.
Added better trip planning capabilities to a route (you can set arrival/departure/layover times for via-points ).
Added a context menu for the hand and selection tools.
Added a read-only 'Unlisted Data' list that contains all items that are in no other lists.
Added support for waypoint creation date, which will not be changed when updating the waypoint.
Added information in waypoint properties which routes that waypoint is a part of.
Added ability to create a route from a named trail.
Added support for temperature and pressure in track statistics and graphs.
Added support to delete waypoints that are included in a route.
Added ability to perform undos and redos on supported devices.
Added ability to create waypoint from find result on the map.
Added a photo viewer for Geotagged Photos.
Improvements
Improved display when many photos are at the same spot on the map.
Improved XML processing (so it should now be possible to import and export larger gpx files than previously).
Fixes
Fixed numerous issues with finding addresses.
Fixed area calculation for tracks.
Fixed issue where the Geocache symbol was not consistent with found status when importing or adding a geocache.

I'm using OSX 10.8, and just about everything about the beta is working fine.
However, as soon as Birdseye attempts to log in to download topos, the app immediately crashes. I managed to download two maps yesterday, but it has crashed consistently every time since then (20+ times?).
I'm really not clear on what the issue is.

    added bonus just started;
sometimes it'll "login" to Birdseye, but then tell me there's no coverage for that area (middle of California....definitely coverage.)

    BirdsEye Imagery Crash on v4.0.0.6

Every time I try to connect to my BirdsEye account BC crashes. BaseCamp does not Log this crash either and therefore does not offer to send the log to Development.

Those of you getting crashes when attempting BirdsEye downloads... Can you PM me with the contents of the dialog that you get when you press "Report" on Apple's crash report dialog?

Also, do any of you run your Mac through a proxy to connect to the internet?

I'm not using a Proxy Server to connect. Also, PM will not allow me to send the complete report as it is to much text. PM me with an email and I'll send it to you or let me know what part of the report you don't want and I'll put it in a PM.

    "Locked" files

I wanted to "lock" one of my waypoint files on my Montana so that it couldn't be Deleted. Unfortunately, BaseCamp crashes if you do try to delete the file and the Montana ignores the File System attributes and deletes the file. It would be nice if BaseCamp as a File System compliant application and at least would provide a warning message rather than just crashing with no error report.

What would be even better would be if BaseCamp and Garmin GPS's would actually behave like File System aware application and allow for the setting of "read-only" data.

There are often times when I don't want either the GPS or BaseCamp to delete data without a message letting me know I need to remove the Lock.

I saw a 100% increase in Backup file size from v3.3.2 to v4.0.0.4 but have not seen the type of increase you're seeing since my v4.0.0.4 install.

    GPX (XML) Validation Failure

Is there any way to get a log dump of a GPX validation failure from BaseCamp? I know I can go online and do this but since BC is doing the job anyway it seems like it ought to be able to save a log of the failure report.

    Greetings,

I've been updating each beta release for the last year and starting in late July I've observed that the size of the BaseCamp_Backup file has grown exponentially. While I have a significant quantity of Waypoints and Tracks in my Collection, I did not add many during this period. In fact the net quantity may be similar.

Here's the history of file bloat:
    BaseCamp_120724.Backup 28.4 MB
    BaseCamp_120725.Backup 47.3 MB
    BaseCamp_120730.Backup 88.9 MB
    BaseCamp_120802.Backup 121.4 MB
    BaseCamp_120806.Backup 145.2 MB
    BaseCamp_120810.Backup 173.2 MB

My hardware is MacBookPro8,3, 8 GB RAM and a 250 GB Solid State SSD.
    System is 10.6.8

    Thanks,
    KM

Thanks to RockyDirtBiker we were able to find an issue where some data about tracks and geotagged photos was being duplicated which was causing BaseCamp's backup files to grow significantly. We are working on a fix.
