BaseCamp 4.0 beta posted

BaseCamp 4.0 is here. We believe this beta to be reasonably stable, but it is a Beta, so there are definitely some quirks to be expected.

If you do find any bugs, crashes or have input of any kind, please let us know. You can respond to this forum post, create a new thread, use the error reporting functionality or use the “Send Feedback…” option within BaseCamp. If you find a bug, don’t just think “It’s Beta, it will be fixed”, please report it.

For Garmin Adventures BaseCamp will display surveys. Please take a second to fill it out let us know what you think. They are very short.

You can download the installer here.

A few words about your data
When you install 4.0.0.4, all your data from 3.3 (or earlier) will be copied. You can keep using 3.3 afterwards, 4.0 will not alter your 3.3 data (but 3.3 also cannot see any changes you make with 4.0).

Change list

This is the list of changes. There is a separate thread What’s new in BaseCamp 4.0 that gives some more explanations (please excuse the Windows screenshots until I get a chance to create a Mac version. The features are basically identical between the two platforms), and a Garmin Adventures thread that introduces that new feature (again please excuse the Windows screenshots).

Added support for Garmin Adventures.
Added support to search for adventures.
Added support for transferring adventures to devices.
Added support for authoring and publishing adventures.
Added chase camera adventure playback.
Other New Features
Added intersection search. If you add an '&' between two roads, it will find the intersection, e.g. 'Main & Elm'
Added support for BaseStation mode for Rinos and Astros. Firmware support coming soon.
Added better trip planning capabilities to a route (you can set arrival/departure/layover times for via-points ).
Added a context menu for the hand and selection tools.
Added a read-only 'Unlisted Data' list that contains all items that are in no other lists.
Added support for waypoint creation date, which will not be changed when updating the waypoint.
Added information in waypoint properties which routes that waypoint is a part of.
Added ability to create a route from a named trail.
Added support for temperature and pressure in track statistics and graphs.
Added support to delete waypoints that are included in a route.
Added ability to perform undos and redos on supported devices.
Added ability to create waypoint from find result on the map.
Added a photo viewer for Geotagged Photos.
Improvements
Improved display when many photos are at the same spot on the map.
Improved XML processing (so it should now be possible to import and export larger gpx files than previously).
Fixes
Fixed numerous issues with finding addresses.
Fixed area calculation for tracks.
Fixed issue where the Geocache symbol was not consistent with found status when importing or adding a geocache.
  • I really like and appreciate the added Track Filtering capability. But, (you knew that was coming) please make it a batch operable feature. Many of us that share rides, and now Adventures, will need to filter many tracks and doing so one at a time is tedious.

    Cheers,

I totally missed this. Thank you very much. I've been hoping (and harping on occasion) for this functionality. I also second Dan's hope that it's batch operable in the future.
    • I selected several objects in the Unlisted Data-List and dragged those objects to an existing List. I expected the selected objects to disappear from the Unlisted Data-List once I moved them to a List but they remain in the Unlisted Data-List.

    Cheers,

yep, the only way to get a geo object out of the unlisted data list is to delete it from your collection. When they fix it I think it should be an optional smart list function.

    Hmmmmmmm,

I found a waypoint and some other stuff in Unlisted data today.

I dragged the waypoint into an existing list.

    Quit BC, and restarted...

The waypoint is still in both lists.

I selected the waypoint inside the Unlisted Data list...

Chose Delete from my collection from the Contextual menu...

It was gone from both lists, as expected...

    Chose Undo

Now the waypoint is not in the Unlisted Data, but it is back in the other list...

    Hmmmmmmmm

I have no clue what that means but I observed that.

    Where Used. . .

The Lists/Categories that Waypoints are used in can now be located and that is much appreciated - but why stop there? I really need to be able to "locate" all of my data objects. How about a column in the Detailed Data List for "Lists" and apply that attribute to all of the other data (Routes, Tracks, BirdsEye Imagery, Custom Maps) objects?

I have a ton of Lists and List Folders. Finding the List/s that an object is use in can take a significant amount of time.

When you right click a geo object like a waypoint in the Unlisted Data list (UDL), I think Delete should be grayed out because the list is read only. Don't change the ability to delete from the Collection when your in and the unlisted data list. This is the only use I have found for the UDL.

I see it as System-write-only. After reading over your point and azdrmn's comment, I think I see why you see it as read-only and I would agree that the "Delete" should be grayed out since what the user is doing is Deleting from My Collection.

I also agree with your "Smart List" comment. UDL really is nothing more than a canned Smart List for data that does not live in a List (or Smart List). But, since Win-BC does not support Smart List's the UDL needed to be a "canned" Smart List. If I needed use the Windows version more often I'd really be irritated that Win-BC doesn't have Smart List's.

    Cheers,
  • I saw an announcement of a new Windows beta and lo and behold there is also a Mac disk image version 4.0.0.5 in the same developers' directory:

    http://developer.garmin.com/apps/BC/

So is the change log the same for the Mac version?

  • Works OK with Mountain Lion

So far, BC 4.0.0.5 is working just fine with OS 10.8, Mountain Lion.

If you install ML, don't panic if on first launch your apps are slow as molasses. Quit and re-launch and they run as fast or faster than before.

v4.0.0.5 has a bit if a problem when I started to create an Adventure. As you can see from the screenshot below, BC removed ALL of My Collection data from that pain. A bit unnerving.

I had to close BC and restart to recover My Collection. The Adventure was created OK.

I tried to replicate this behavior but it only happened once. I'll keep trying.

DRTBYK, I haven't ever seen this issue. Which OS are you running? Let us know if it ever happens again. Thanks for reporting.
