Custom Symbol / Icon for waypoints in BC

Under edit menu I find Manage custom waypoints symbols but when selected, I see None Found. I think you have to put your symbol in a special folder but I can find the path. Also will jpeg work?

Thanks
  • One Challenge with this - can you advise please

Yes, you're correct that "Manage custom symbols" is primarily for use with sending to and receiving from our older non-mass storage devices (GPSmap 60, eTrex, etc.). It can also be used to change a symbol's id once loaded, in case you have existing waypoints expecting a specific custom symbol id.

To answer your initial question if you're still curious, you can drop the images in /Users/<your username>/Library/Application Support/Garmin/Custom Waypoint Symbols/ to have them read in as options. The folder probably won't exist if you don't have any symbols yet. They should be named between "0" and "63", and we support png, tga, tiff, bmp, and jpeg formats. So, for example, "5.jpg" would be read in as custom symbol #5.

While technically you can use any resolution image, we scale it down to 24x24 for display in BaseCamp, and further to 16x16 for transfer to the device. I recommend using a square image for best results.

Once the symbol has been loaded it will appear at the end of the list you get when you change a waypoint's symbol.

    Hope this helps!

I have been able to make and load custom symbols into Basecamp quite happily.

I have not been able to figure out how to get them into my GPS. Map62s.

When I set up custom waypoints in Basecamp and copy them to the GPS the symbols translate back to a blue flag.

How do I get them from the computer so they are held in the GPS please?

    Thanks

    David Francis
  • I haven't done this in a while, so this may be less than correct, but my memory is that not all Garmins support all symbols. So if you choose a symbol in BC that your GPS doesn't support, it will revert to a default symbol -- in your case the blue flag, in others a black square, etc.

If your GPS allows changing symbols on the unit itself, that menu should reveal which ones it supports.

I can appreciate supporting the older units - I have a couple - but it would seem easy enough to also support the newer "Mass Storage" units that do have Custom Symbols folders (i.e, Garmin\CustomSymbols\). I thought surely the betaBC Symbol Manager would recognize my Montana - alas, no.

    What am I doing wrong?

I have tried all format and naming suggestions but the symbols do not show up in BC. Have tried .bmp, .jpg and .png, 24x24 and 32x32, and naming the files 0, 1, 2, and 000, 001, 002 (plus the appropriate file extension).
    I have placed the files in /Users/<your username>/Library/Application Support/Garmin/Custom Waypoint Symbols/
What am I doing wrong?

Good question...the file should be of the format: 1-64.png (1.png, 2.png - 64.png). The image size should be 16x16 or 24x24.

Try this one which works for me. . .

    Thanks for the symbol :)
I'm using Swedish MacOS 10.7 and here you can see where I put your image: (Bibliotek is Library in swedish)

but it does not show up among the other symbols. This is where is should show up, right?

I must have missed something fundamental…

That all looks correct to me. Seems like it should show in the "Trattisar" window.

Maybe the BC Dev Team has some input?

    Overlay images

Here is another question. Is it somehow possible to indicate areas of interest? The Swedish forest administration has set up a website that shows areas of particular interest. I have used Photoshop to make all sorts of composite images (with the help of Google Earth) so I can display this on my Oregon 450. My method is very time consuming and I wonder if there is an easier and smarter way of doing this?

This it how the swedish maps look:

And this is with the interesting areas included (in red):

It is annoying that transparent .gif and .png files embedded in a .kmz file work great in BaseCamp but not at all in Oregon 450.
I have tried to use .jpg with a RGB background of 255, 0, 255 that seems to be invisible in custom symbols but that did not work.

It looks as though the file path for the Custom Waypoints Symbols got localized. If you're running in Swedish, try renaming your folder to "Anpassade waypointsymboler".

Additionally, if you have any (supported) devices, importing the symbols with the Custom Symbol Manager should create the folder for you. Most of the older devices that this supports will have a default set of custom symbol images even if you haven't loaded any.

    Sorry about the inconvenience.

If you have created Garmin Custom Maps using GE and image overlays which result in a KMZ file, then you can Import the KMZ map (image only) into BaseCamp which will show in your LIST. Then you can select the Custom Map(s) and Transfer it/them to your Oregon using the BC Transfer to Device and then selecting Garmin Custom Maps and Imagery.

    That should work(?).
