BC very slow export, track handling buggy

I started using Basecamp recently to plan routes I want to transfer to my Edge 705. I used the 705 to track my training for about a year and have accumulated a substantial amount of tracks in "history".

Now Basecamp alway transfers all those tracks to the computer whenever I plug in my Garmin device. That is a little annoying, since i takes a long time until I can copy anything to the device, but not enough of a nuisance to make me really complain.

The bad thing is, that transferring anything to the 705 takes about 10 Minutes, even if it is only one route consisting of only three waypoints. I could live with that, too - but the bad thing is, that I cannot stop the program from transferring all my tracks into "Saved rides" on the device. The File "Temp.gpx" in the subfolder "GPX" on the 705 is almost 32MB - no wonder it takes long to transfer. This happens even if I deselect "Tracks" in the export Dialog.

The worst thing about this is, that it takes around 20 Minutes for the Edge 705 to power up after every transfer and it takes another 14 Minutes only to enter the Menu "Go where?"->"Saved rides". Yes, thats 14 Minutes only to select the Menu until the 705 accepts other input. I assume it is because of those many tracks I didn't want to have there in the first place.

Unfortunately I have not found a way to get rid of those tracks, save of deleting "temp.gpx" and transferring routes and waypoints with mapsource on PeCee. Deleting the tracks from "My Collection" on Basecamp had no effect (apart from those tracks no longer being displayed in Basecamp - the are still being transferret to "temp.gpx).

Does anyone know of a way to get rid of those tracks? And to stop Basecamp from importing my "History" over and over again? I have not use for my history data in Basecamp.

BTW this is Basecamp 3.0.1, Edge FW 3.10.
  • Thanks for the feedback. We have become aware of this and some other unintended consequences to our change to support sync data devices. We will be addressing them in a future release.

The only work around I can suggest in the meantime is to carry less data around on your 705. That data can be transferred to BaseCamp or Training Center and sent back later if you wish.

    Sorry for the inconvenience.

Thanks for the feedback. It is good to hear the problem has been heard and will be addressed.

But how do I delete old history data? On my 305 it got overwritten automatically because of its limited capacity. Do I have to do that manually on the unit? That will be quite a task with its 95 rides on it.

    Data transfer to edge 705

Hi, I can underline the buggy data transfer! I converted from Mapsource to Basecamp 3.0.2. It takes minutes after connecting the edge because Basecamp downloads ALL history. This is useless.

In addition Basecamp retransfers all data back to the edge, when choosing to send a small route it takes again minutes...

At the moment Basecamp is not considered as a working software, I'll keep it with MapSource until this is fixed.

When will an update be available?

    Kind regards

    Must do a correction:

Basecamp makes the edge crash (Firmware 3.2) everytime I try to transfer a route or whatever. The two arrows beside the recognized edge rotate and rotate and rotate, edge is dead....

I would be very happy for a quick resolve. I only keep my PC alive for MapSource and would like to live 100% with Mac...

    Thanks for swift action

    Data Transfer to edge 705

    Another finding:

Edge is not crashing but during a data transfer it also transfers the installed map (from the main memory, not the sd).
In my case Swiss Topo V2 with about 400MB...

    this takes about 30 minutes.

Have I wrong settings or is this a bug?

    Kind regards

    Another Bug

When making lists and adding several routes, BC will always display ALL routes on the map.

You can imagine with my 45 actual routes the map looks messy and there is no way in getting rid of the not used routes.

    Is there a workaround?

    Kind regards

The best way is to organize your routes into individual lists. When you select a list, only data in that list is displayed.

Why do you think that BaseCamp is transfering the map? Which direction do you believe it is being transfered? BaseCamp doesn't have code to that will allow it to transfer maps, so something very strange is going on.

    Hi,

I suggest BC is transferring the map, because after about 30 minutes you'll see under "my Device" the Swiss Topo.

However discovered another thing and thats a serious. When sending a route to the Edge, BC sends ALL History as routes back to the Edge. Under my saved routes on the 705 I now have hundreds of files!

The worse thing: the gpx folder on the 705 is empty! I can't manually delete anything! This renders my edge useless....

    I need urgent help

    Thanks

Retransfered data from BC to edge

    Me again,

after a long night I managed to find out where all these routes did hide...

Mac or BC create a "hidden" folder named "trashes" on the micro sd and the internal memory. All the routes and history protocols have been transferred to the internal "trashes" folder. With standard settings the folder does not appear in Windows or Mac (be sure to activate: "show hidden folders").

I now cleared everything off and my edge is "virgin" again. However there seem to be a major issue with the file transfer BC to edge. I will continue to use it under Mapsource on an old PC and wait for a working BC version.

I wonder if BC is able to transfer just one route to the device (as Mapsource) or does it always transfer the whole collection of routes in my lists?

    Kind regards
