Things that I cannot accomplish in Mac BaseCamp

We are very interested in learning about tasks that people are trying to accomplish in BaseCamp, but are unable to.

As most people know, Garmin originally had a very technical application for Windows called MapSource. This application was full-featured, but very challenging to use for many users. For a long time, we wanted to create an application that was easy to use by all of our customers.

When we started designing our route planning application for the Mac, we wanted to start with a good looking, intuitive user interface that all customers could pick up and understand. This includes the soccer mom that is planning her car pool route to the hard core bicyclist that is creating a trail map. As with all re-architecture efforts, every feature from MapSource did not port right over in the first versions of BaseCamp.

So we are asking people to tell us what they are trying to accomplish with BaseCamp and are unable to.
  • I just bought a dezl760. Since I've started to use, I now have waypoints that I saved that multiplied themselves up to 4 times in the unit. I cannot delete them from the GPS using the software. I can click on Coastal Food Services 1, Coastal Food Services 2 and so on up to number 4 and when I right click, there's no delete. When I click on one of them, I go to EDIT and delete is not allowed (not blackened). How can I delete these multiple waypoints that have been added, I assume when I tried transferring data. When I go to My Collection, they are only there once. When I go to Internal Storage, many of the places appear 4 times. How do I delete them?

One method that many nuvi, zumo, and dezl users use is to delete all the waypoints from the device using the device's menu after you have all your data in BaseCamp. Then you can only send what you want from BaseCamp. I apologize for that inconvenience, but currently there is no way to delete data on those devices from within BaseCamp. If you are comfortable doing so, we'd like to see your duplicated data as well. If you would export some of the duplicated waypoints as GPX and send them to [email protected], we'll try to diagnose why they are being duplicated. We have done a lot of work to try to prevent duplicated waypoints, but apparently there is more to do. Thanks in advance for the help.

I use Basecamp almost daily and there are a number of things that I'd love to be implemented, not in any specific order.

    1. Save using lower case extension as a default (or at least the option to have it that way).
I used Windows Mapsource for ages and it saved them as .gpx, now Mac Basecamp wants to save them all as .GPX. Not a big thing, but I use them on my website and when I save the files I have to rename them to .gpx

    2. Bulk filter tracks
I usually edit my tracks a few at a time, and so if I could highlight them all and have them all filter to 100 points each, that'd be so much more convenient than having to go through one by one and doing it. It works for changing colours, it just seems strange that I can't filter them like that.

    3. Filter options
On the filter options, the default is set to filtering for time at 1 second. Well, I never do that. I want to filter them for 100 points each. That means first clicking the radio box, next to maximum points, and then the default number of 300 and setting it to 100. That could be reduced by a click if selecting the box where it says 300 automatically switched it to filtering for maximum points... which is the logical option, and what it did on Windows MapSource, but not here. I also by default don't want to save the original, so being able to uncheck that box would be lovely.

    4. Autorename tracks
I name my tracks in the YYYYMMDD format, very different from the name the GPS62s gives. Being able to select a track, and telling it to autorename would be nice too. It could pull the date from the first track point (mine are nearly always only for one day anyway)

    5. Hide adventures
I have no use for the Garmin Adventures thing in my sidebar, and never will use it, but it's there. I'd like to get rid of it.

    6. Notifications
I'd like to be able to import things into a set area, and if possible it could be so powerful as to do all of the above processing automatically that'd be fantastic (rename to YYYYMMDD, set colour to dark gray, filter to 100 points, copy to All list)

That's all for now! Here's hoping that something there gets implemented, thank you!
  • 5. In the Windows version you can, surprised you can't in the mac?

I think he means more than just Minimize the Adventures listing. I think he would like to not have Adventures show at all in the Collections pain. Which you can't do in either OS version of BaseCamp.

    Yes, like that!
  • I'd like the ability to make it gone as well. I'll never use it.

You can in Windows ... IIRC you right click and select from the list.

By golly you are correct - but, you knew that. Seems my Win-BC was responding so slowly that I never saw the x-Remove option. Thanks SUSSAMB.

I would like to be able to search the Library. I want to look for a waypoint or route etc.. I would like to be able to search within My Collection or within a folder or within a list.

    Thank You

I'm curious, what do you perceive the advantage to you would be in limiting the scope of your search as you have suggested? Remember that basecamp requires all names to be unique and that lists, folders, etc. really only contain pointers to the items living in your "My Collection".
