Things that I cannot accomplish in Mac BaseCamp

We are very interested in learning about tasks that people are trying to accomplish in BaseCamp, but are unable to.

As most people know, Garmin originally had a very technical application for Windows called MapSource. This application was full-featured, but very challenging to use for many users. For a long time, we wanted to create an application that was easy to use by all of our customers.

When we started designing our route planning application for the Mac, we wanted to start with a good looking, intuitive user interface that all customers could pick up and understand. This includes the soccer mom that is planning her car pool route to the hard core bicyclist that is creating a trail map. As with all re-architecture efforts, every feature from MapSource did not port right over in the first versions of BaseCamp.

So we are asking people to tell us what they are trying to accomplish with BaseCamp and are unable to.

The only application that actually installs maps is MapInstall. BaseCamp will start MapInstall to actually install maps, so the maps that are detected by MapInstall is important. Which maps show up in BaseCamp, but not in MapInstall? If a map only have a base map, it will show up in BaseCamp, but not in MapInstall. A map needs "detailed" data to be installed to the GPS.

Here first is a screen shot from BaseCamp showing the installed maps:

And here is a screen shot from MapInstall showing the available maps to download to the device:

"US TOPO - East" and "US TOPO - West" are from the old US TOPO v3.02 CD's I think. If you have them working in BaseCamp it must've been installed to your Mac's HD.

Perhaps (Mac) MapInstall doesn't support those old (from 2002) maps.

The topo maps are available to install (see second image). It's City Navigator North America 2009 that is not available.

Oops, my bad [Goes and stands in a corner--happening a lot today].

I've no idea other than Mac MapInstall doesn't support those (old) maps. On a PC they're registry based but I don't how they're handled on a Mac. Garmin changed their map format in 2009 or so from registry/img format to .gmap format.

Now the US TOPO's are also old but (on a PC) they use a different registry key.

Thanks for trying. Actually, City Navigator 2009 is in .gmapi format.

    Mapmanager shows these installed maps:

Hmmm, just checked and my City Navigator North America NT 2009 maps are registry/img based and not .gmap. Could be they're in both formats depending upon when/how they were purchased. My records show I unlocked them on April 14th 2008.

I may have used Mapconvert to convert them to the Mac at some time. I can't remember specifically. I converted the Topo maps just a couple of days ago. Maybe I should convert my old PC based City Navigator again just for grins.

Worth a try. You probably did do that 5-6 years ago since RoadTrip (the Mac version of MapSource) only came out in 2009 or so.

Thank you all for your help.

    CANNOT DELETE waypoints/favorites from device.

This has been driving me crazy for a long time...

I'm a tech-guy, both Mac & Win, and a very longtime Garmin device user ...currently have several Nuvi's & a Zumo.
Thanks for the evolution of BaseMap, yet admittedly early on it caused me a bit of frustration.
My biggest hair-pulling with BaseMap these days is that no matter which GPS I'm connected to, any waypoint/Favorite that I delete from the device APPEARS to then be deleted looking at it from BaseMap ....BUT upon disconnect, the GPS still has those "deleted" waypoints shown in the list of Favorites.
I can ADD waypoints to any device, but they will NOT delete!
BaseMap makes it look as if it's talking to the device (even prompts "Do you really want to delete...?") I click YES, then watch the device appear to be accessed, AND after that when clicking on the device the waypoint(s) I wanted deleted appear to be gone ....BUT eject the device, start it up, and BAM -there those deleted waypoints still are!! WHY??????

Please don't tell me to delete waypoints from within the device itself ...I know how to do that, and it's easy if only a few waypoints are deleted. However I'm trying to selectively delete 100+ waypoints (yes I know the newer Nuvi's will allow you from within the device to select a batch of waypoints to delete ...but older units will not.) The bottomline is: whether an old or new Nuvi/Zumo is connected to BaseMap, it LOOKS like adding or deleting waypoints is easy, but the DELETE action doesn't really happen on the device.
PLEASE..... what am I missing here??

    THANK YOU...
