Things that I cannot accomplish in Mac BaseCamp

We are very interested in learning about tasks that people are trying to accomplish in BaseCamp, but are unable to.

As most people know, Garmin originally had a very technical application for Windows called MapSource. This application was full-featured, but very challenging to use for many users. For a long time, we wanted to create an application that was easy to use by all of our customers.

When we started designing our route planning application for the Mac, we wanted to start with a good looking, intuitive user interface that all customers could pick up and understand. This includes the soccer mom that is planning her car pool route to the hard core bicyclist that is creating a trail map. As with all re-architecture efforts, every feature from MapSource did not port right over in the first versions of BaseCamp.

So we are asking people to tell us what they are trying to accomplish with BaseCamp and are unable to.

I've been using them for quite some time with my older 478s. They need to be in the <user_Library_Application Support_Garmin_Custom Waypoint Symbols> directory and must follow the Garmin naming format.

That's because only the old GPSMAP units are supported by BC. Newer units are not recognized.

    Now that's a switch. I wasn't aware of that.

Hi, I am using my symbols on Windows BC for years mainly to build gpi files, that means naming ang 24bits colors are OK.
On my Mac (in french) they are located in: MacHD>users>mago77>Bibliothèque>Application Support>Garmin>Symboles de Waypoint personnalisés> That's the sam as MacHD>Users>User>Library>Application Support>Garmin>Custom Waypoint Symbols>
I understand that Custom Symbols are not working on new units like my Oregon 650... that's progres.
  • I have made a number of Google Fusion Table using lists of waypoints prepared in Basecamp. At the moment I output as a .gpx file and then convert it to .csv using GPS Visualizer. I'd like to be able to do save direct to csv from Basecamp, but Basecamp gives me a lot of stuff I don't need, while GPSVisualizer gives me a csv file that requires very little work to clean it up ready to upload to the Fusion Table. It would be great if Basecamp had an export dialogue which allowed me to choose which fields to export.

BTW I'm a long time user of Basecamp and I really appreciate the changes and improvements you guys have made over the years.

It turns out there is a way to get what you want with a little work. BaseCamp supports import and export plugins that are documented here: https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?13452-Data-Converter-Plugin-Development&highlight=converter+plugin

I modified one of the plugins bundled with BaseCamp and created an example Fusion Table export plugin. If you unzip the attached PlugIns.zip in your ~/Library/Application Support/Garmin folder and restart BaseCamp, you'll have a new export option: "Fusion Table" with just waypoints and less obscure fields.

If you look at the .xsl file in the new folder you'll see how it's done. You don't have to understand the code to see the fields that are being included. If you want less columns or in a different order or column names, all that is easily changeable in the .xsl. You can see the CSV plugin I started from in the attached GPX11toCSVText.GarminPlugin.zip. I know changing this is a little technical, but with a little trial and error, it is very powerful.

Edit: It turns out Fusion Tables key off "latitude" and "longitude" in the column names and the attached plugin uses "lat" and "lon". You will probably want to change that in the xsl file when you unzip it.

 I will be very Basic in Windows BC when displaying list contain's you have a set of tabs on the bottom of the left panel that let you filter type of item displayed. (Tracks, Routes, Waypoints...) in Mac BC when displaying a list you do not have tabs to filter items, you get everything just sorted by Symbol or name. Do I miss something?
  • Click on the gear and drag down to View Detailed Data List. In the window which opens up, click on the tab you want.

Way back in post 190 and replied to in post 195 (thanks for the reply), I mentioned adjusting the speed based on an activity, which is there in 4.2.

However, it only allows decrease adjustment of -5mph, which isn't enough. I would prefer a percentage adjustment, but just allowing more of a decrease would be fine. When we pull our Airstream, we stay under 65 mph AND we stop a lot traveling with dogs, so our average speed is much less than "-5 mph"; it is closer to -20 or -25 across a typical travel day (6+ hours).

I also like the new Trip Planner, but without more of an adjustment to the average speed, I really can't use it.
