Things that I cannot accomplish in Mac BaseCamp

We are very interested in learning about tasks that people are trying to accomplish in BaseCamp, but are unable to.

As most people know, Garmin originally had a very technical application for Windows called MapSource. This application was full-featured, but very challenging to use for many users. For a long time, we wanted to create an application that was easy to use by all of our customers.

When we started designing our route planning application for the Mac, we wanted to start with a good looking, intuitive user interface that all customers could pick up and understand. This includes the soccer mom that is planning her car pool route to the hard core bicyclist that is creating a trail map. As with all re-architecture efforts, every feature from MapSource did not port right over in the first versions of BaseCamp.

So we are asking people to tell us what they are trying to accomplish with BaseCamp and are unable to.

Although we don't have "search along route", you can click on the map to do a "quick search". Using your two examples:

New in 4.2 is category search. What this enables you to do is type in things like "fuel shell" to do a search for "shell" of type "fuel". Other examples would be "hotels, new york, ny" or "chinese food, dallas, tx".

The "quick search" is a very handy feature but it addresses a different objective. The Along-route/Along-track search would address those times when you've finished your basic route planning and now want to find those extra things to do: like Geocaching and scenic attractions. Without Along-route/track search it takes a lot of searching to cover a multi-day/week trip.

I hope you folks will find a way to get this function into v4.2 at some point.

We are investigating searching along a route. It may not be part of 4.2, but it is something we're looking into.

    Hello,

I'm an avid mountainbike rider. I bought some time ago a Garmin Edge 605 which I like very much. I use it in conjunction with BaseCamp to plan and navigate mountainbike routes. What I am looking for in a mountainbike route is to avoid as much as possible paved roads (cars and bicyles don't match well on roads and unfortunately the latters always lose the battle when they meet. Plus, on a less depressing note, the great thing about mountainbiking is being in the nature). I have played in the routing preferences with the "avoidance" preferences but the routing still uses paved roads too much for my liking (when there are clearly trails, paths and unpaved roads not far away from the road that can get me to reach my destination). For the moment I resort to then manually move the route to the nearby trail or path but this is obviously bothersome and time consuming. So I don't know if there is something you could do to optimize offroad route planning.

    Regards,

    Ran
  • The problem isn't likely to be Basecamp, more that the map you're using doesn't have those trails/paths as routeable.

Probably due to my inexperience, but I have been unable to edit existing tracks in Mac BaseCamp 4.1.2. I am interested in being able to "erase" sections of a track on which I made a wrong turn so that the end result is a clean track which others could follow. I have seen that earlier versions of BaseCamp for windows contained an eraser tool so that this could be accomplished, however, there does not appear to be a counterpart in the latest Mac BaseCamp release?

That's correct. There is not a Track Point Erase Tool in Mac-BC. It would be nice if there were. Currently you must open the Track properties (Info) window and select the point(s) you want to remove and Delete them.

    Cheers,

tested with version 4.1.2, 4.0.4 (mac)
track length 332 km, points 5580
it's impossible to create route (must shutdown basecamp it's ok with windows version)
when i want to split at the middle the first part = 166km and the second = 332km
that explain why it's impossible to create a route...

We need an easier and quicker way to create a new Route and optimise it. Thanks.

Editing Tracks is rediculous because I can spend hours in just trying to cut off part of a track and save the part I want to no avail. There are no steps to follow or icons for cutting or attaching. I have the Base Camp Manual but there are no directions.
